The building
Brown’s needs little introduction in Mayfair. Long celebrated as dating from 1837, the hotel’s own commissioned research now traces its founding to 1832, when James and Sarah Brown opened their doors at 23 Dover Street. It has never been renamed, rebuilt or relocated, which makes it London’s oldest luxury hotel.
Its guest book reads like a syllabus. Alexander Graham Bell made Britain’s first telephone call here in 1876. Rudyard Kipling came from the day he was married and returned for more than four decades; Agatha Christie’s At Bertram’s Hotel owes much to her stays. Theodore Roosevelt stayed before his marriage in 1886, and Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt spent their honeymoon here. Rocco Forte Hotels acquired Brown’s in 2003.
The brief
To act as main decorating contractor across a sequence of rooms and suites: preparing every surface, hanging premium wallcoverings, fine painting, French polishing and specialist finishes, and spray-finishing the hotel’s richly moulded ceilings. All of it within a fully operating hotel, to programme, around guests in residence.
Our approach
Preparation and priming. Period walls were filled, made good and primed until they were true enough to receive both fine paint and wide-width printed papers. On walls of this age, the hours spent here decide everything that follows.
Setting out. Adam’s Eden is a large-scale design with a 108.5 cm half-drop repeat. Each room was set out from its focal points (chimneypieces, doorcases and bed walls) so that the birds and branches fall naturally, and so the pattern meets the cornice with composure.
Ceilings. The ornate moulded ceilings were spray-finished to give a flawless, even coat that keeps every crisp detail of the plasterwork, something a brush or roller cannot achieve on enrichment of this depth.
Fine finishes. Fine painting, French polishing and specialist finishes were carried out by the same team, so that joinery, walls and ceilings were finished as one coherent scheme.
A live hotel. Brown’s remained open throughout. We worked closely with the main contractor and the hotel’s management on access, timing, protection and housekeeping, keeping work contained and quiet. The project was delivered on time, with the hotel open throughout.
Materials
- Lewis & Wood – Adam’s Eden: designed by the decorative artist Adam Calkin and one of Lewis & Wood’s signature designs, printed on wide non-woven paper. The design is identified from the printed selvedge photographed on site; the colourway is not recorded here.
- Other wallcoverings appear in our photographs, including a green trailing-leaf design; these are not identified here.
Outcome
Rooms that feel as though they have always been this way: Adam Calkin’s garden climbing beneath freshly finished plasterwork, and calm, tailored bedrooms. All of it delivered on time, in a hotel that never closed its doors.
