Hand-painted wallpaper installation

Scenic, chinoiserie and panelled hand-painted papers, in the manner of de Gournay and Fromental, hung in London houses and hotels.

Hand-painted papers need a sound wall, a patient set-out and time. Panels are usually supplied in a sequence, and the scene has to meet across doors, windows and corners. We plan the set-out from a fixed point before the first panel goes up.

Preparation follows the maker's specification. Some papers are hung over a lining, some are not. If the wall is not ready for the material, we say so at the survey.

We install these papers; we do not make them and are not affiliated with any maker. Brown's Hotel, Mayfair includes scenic and chinoiserie wallcoverings, among them Lewis & Wood's Adam's Eden, identified from the selvedge photographed on site.

Do hand-painted wallpapers need lining paper?

It depends on the maker's specification. Some are hung over a lining, some are specified without one. We follow the specification.

How are scenic wallpaper panels set out?

From a fixed point, in the supplied sequence, so the scene meets where it should around doors, windows and corners. The set-out is agreed before the first panel is hung.
