How we work

Five steps, and the same people throughout.

  1. 01

    Consultation

We start with a conversation. We advise, and we listen to the date, the building, and the way you need to keep using it.

  2. 02

    Scope, room by room

After the survey we estimate and write a scope of works by room. Once agreed, that scope is the template for the job. Openings come out of the measure. Pattern repeat and wastage go in.

  3. 03

    A leader on the ground

Every project has a project leader who is your day-to-day contact. They look after the craft, the progress, and what you have been told to expect.

  4. 04

    Weekly oversight

On a longer commission, senior oversight quality-controls the work and agrees with you, each week, what happens next.

  5. 05

    The same core team

The people you meet at the start are the core team that finishes. On a long project, people can stay on site or nearby, where that suits the building and the budget.

Aftercare

The hang is not finished when we leave.

About four to six weeks later we come back, once the paper has had a chance to settle. Seams and edges are looked at. For twelve months, workmanship of the hang is guaranteed. Building movement and damp are not.

Questions

Before you book the hang.

The questions that decide a quotation: cost, time, preparation, who buys the paper, and what happens after we leave.

What does wallcovering installation cost in London?

There is no honest flat rate per roll. The figure follows the measured area after openings are taken off, the pattern repeat and the wastage it creates, the state of the walls, and the material. A plain contract vinyl in an empty room is a different day's work from a hand-painted scenic in an occupied house, or a hotel corridor that can only be reached between guests.

Access, protection and making good are written into the scope. They are not discovered at the end. We estimate from a site survey or from drawings, and we say what has been allowed for.

How far ahead do you need to be booked?

We give a date after the survey. A single room in a private house can often be scheduled sooner than a hotel package that has to move floor by floor around guests.

If the paper is free-issue, the supplier's lead time sits inside the programme and we plan the hang around delivery. Tell us the date you have in mind and we will say whether it is realistic.

Do you prepare the walls before hanging?

Where the specification includes it, preparation means stripping old paper, sanding with dust extraction, and making good cracks and uneven surfaces before anything decorative goes up.

Some papers are specified without a lining. Others need one. We follow the specification, and we will say if a wall is not ready to take the material. Joinery can be covered where the drawings show it.

Who supplies the wallpaper?

Usually the designer, the brand or the client supplies the wallcovering, and we manage delivery and quantities. That is the ordinary arrangement on a hotel or a flagship, and it keeps the specification where the designer left it.

We can procure when you want us to. Either way, the order has to cover pattern repeat and wastage. Where the repeat is demanding, that allowance is often in the region of 20%.

What aftercare and warranty do you offer?

Aftercare is included. About four to six weeks after completion we return, at no call-out charge, and look at seams, edges and corners once the paper has settled. Touch-ups that belong to the hang are done then. During the guarantee, a repair to our workmanship is a priority call-out.

The workmanship guarantee lasts twelve months from completion. It covers how the material was hung. It does not cover building movement, damp, leaks, later damage or unsuitable cleaning. The care notes for silk, grasscloth, fabric, vinyl, hand-painted papers, murals and acoustic panels are on the aftercare page.

Which materials do you hang, and where?

Silk, grasscloth and other natural weaves, fabric walling, vinyl and contract wallcoverings, hand-painted papers in the manner of de Gournay and Fromental, murals, and acoustic wallcoverings and panels. We also hang to joinery when that is specified.

London and the surrounding areas; UK-wide for selected projects. The practice is based in London, and most of the work is in central London.
