# A Georgian house in North London

House of Hackney's BAMBUSA in Midnight, hung in a historic guest bedroom of a listed Georgian house in North London.

## The room

A guest bedroom with a long history, in a listed Georgian house. It is a room of character: a built-in writing desk, exposed beams and floorboards that slope with age. The owner is a private client, and in keeping with our policy we do not name them or the house.

## The scheme

House of Hackney’s design consultancy drew up the scheme. Rather than lighten the room, it leans into its dark, romantic character:

- **Walls:** BAMBUSA in Midnight, a painterly bamboo forest after dark
- **Bed hangings:** velvet around an antique four-poster, lined with House of Hackney’s SERPENTIS snakeskin
- **Ceiling:** SERPENTIS
- **Joinery:** fireplace, beams and bookshelves painted in the darkest blue
- **Finishing touches:** pineapple lamps and a brass [SERPENTIS candelabra](https://www.houseofhackney.com/products/house-of-hackney-serpentis-candelabra-brass)

## Our work

Our team hung the BAMBUSA wallpaper. A room like this is unforgiving to paper:

- **No straight lines.** In an old house, walls lean, floors slope and beams cut across the wall at odd angles. The bamboo stems are strong verticals, so each drop had to be plumbed and set out with care. That way the forest reads as upright, even though the room around it is not.
- **Working around period joinery.** The paper is cut around the beams, the fireplace, the built-in desk and the shelving, then finished tight to the dark-blue paintwork.
- **Matching the drama.** Midnight is a deep ground. Joins have to be precise and edges clean, because any gap or lifted seam shows against the dark colour.

Our photographs from April 2019 show the room complete: BAMBUSA on every wall, the four-poster dressed, and SERPENTIS overhead.
