What do you need? ### Five ways to begin. #### I already have the wallpaper Installation, with the product you have bought. Measurements can wait. #### Help me choose and install it A material family, a sample in the room, then the hang. #### I am specifying a project Send the room schedule, drawings and the specification. Unknowns can stay blank. #### A hotel or contractor package Access, programme and who supplies the material. #### Aftercare or a repair A separate note for existing work. A photograph tells us whether it is the hang or the building. How we work ### Five steps, and the same people throughout. 1. 01 #### Consultation We start with a conversation. We advise, and we listen to the date, the building, and the way you need to keep using it. 2. 02 #### Scope, room by room After the survey we estimate and write a scope of works by room. Once agreed, that scope is the template for the job. Openings come out of the measure. Pattern repeat and wastage go in. 3. 03 #### A leader on the ground Every project has a project leader who is your day-to-day contact. They look after the craft, the progress, and what you have been told to expect. 4. 04 #### Weekly oversight On a longer commission, senior oversight quality-controls the work and agrees with you, each week, what happens next. 5. 05 #### The same core team The people you meet at the start are the core team that finishes. On a long project, people can stay on site or nearby, where that suits the building and the budget. Craft ### The join, then the surface. Two details from Brown's Hotel, both photographed after completion. Material light studio ### Light on a material, before a sample. An illustrative simulation of a room corner. About four to six weeks later we come back, once the paper has had a chance to settle. Seams and edges are looked at. For twelve months, workmanship of the hang is guaranteed. Building movement and damp are not. [Read the aftercare](https://www.mrwallcover.com/aftercare/) Questions ### Before you book the hang. The questions that decide a quotation: cost, time, preparation, who buys the paper, and what happens after we leave. #### What does wallcovering installation cost in London? There is no honest flat rate per roll. The figure follows the measured area after openings are taken off, the pattern repeat and the wastage it creates, the state of the walls, and the material. A plain contract vinyl in an empty room is a different day's work from a hand-painted scenic in an occupied house, or a hotel corridor that can only be reached between guests. Access, protection and making good are written into the scope. They are not discovered at the end. We estimate from a site survey or from drawings, and we say what has been allowed for. #### How far ahead do you need to be booked? We give a date after the survey. A single room in a private house can often be scheduled sooner than a hotel package that has to move floor by floor around guests. If the paper is free-issue, the supplier's lead time sits inside the programme and we plan the hang around delivery. Tell us the date you have in mind and we will say whether it is realistic. #### Do you prepare the walls before hanging? Where the specification includes it, preparation means stripping old paper, sanding with dust extraction, and making good cracks and uneven surfaces before anything decorative goes up. Some papers are specified without a lining. Others need one. We follow the specification, and we will say if a wall is not ready to take the material. Joinery can be covered where the drawings show it. #### Who supplies the wallpaper? Usually the designer, the brand or the client supplies the wallcovering, and we manage delivery and quantities. That is the ordinary arrangement on a hotel or a flagship, and it keeps the specification where the designer left it. We can procure when you want us to. Either way, the order has to cover pattern repeat and wastage. Where the repeat is demanding, that allowance is often in the region of 20%. #### What aftercare and warranty do you offer? Aftercare is included. About four to six weeks after completion we return, at no call-out charge, and look at seams, edges and corners once the paper has settled. Touch-ups that belong to the hang are done then. During the guarantee, a repair to our workmanship is a priority call-out. The workmanship guarantee lasts twelve months from completion. It covers how the material was hung. It does not cover building movement, damp, leaks, later damage or unsuitable cleaning. The care notes for silk, grasscloth, fabric, vinyl, hand-painted papers, murals and acoustic panels are on the aftercare page. #### Which materials do you hang, and where? Silk, grasscloth and other natural weaves, fabric walling, vinyl and contract wallcoverings, hand-painted papers in the manner of de Gournay and Fromental, murals, and acoustic wallcoverings and panels. We also hang to joinery when that is specified. London and the surrounding areas; UK-wide for selected projects. The practice is based in London, and most of the work is in central London. How the work is carried ### Three things we will not trade away. #### Respect In a home, the building is someone's house and we are temporary visitors. The work is planned around the household, kept physically contained, and left tidy. A hotel deserves the same restraint. Guests should not have to live in our mess. #### Discretion Private clients are not named, on this site or in passing. We publish the commissions that are already public, and we leave the rest off the page. #### Our word We prefer a straightforward conversation and a clear agreement. We commit to the commissions we take on. An agreed specification and an agreed time are the job. By [Dorin Burcus](https://www.mrwallcover.com/about/#dorin), founder · Last updated 9 October 2026 [Discuss my room](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/?audience=homeowner&intent=advice) Will this wallpaper suit the room? That depends less on the photograph you fell for than on four things the photograph cannot show: how much the wall gets touched, how the light crosses it, how it will be cleaned, and whether moisture reaches it. Settle those first, then choose between the samples that pass. A sample is a small piece of a much bigger decision, because you are choosing how an entire wall looks in daylight, under lamps and beside everything already in the room. ### How will the wall actually be used? Start with traffic. A bedroom wall is rarely touched. The wall beside a staircase takes hands, bags and the odd suitcase every day. A restaurant banquette wall takes chair backs. The more contact a wall gets, the more the surface matters: a delicate paper or a silk can suit a protected feature wall and become a frustration beside a busy passage, where a [contract vinyl](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/contract-vinyl/) or a washable non-woven would shrug off the same use. Then think about the room’s job. A quiet background and a wall that becomes the main feature ask for different things, and that choice affects pattern scale, sheen and colour as much as it affects price. ### What will the light do to it? Look at the sample where it will be installed, beside the flooring, the curtains and the joinery, during the day and again under the room’s usual lamps. A metallic surface can look restrained from one angle and much brighter from another. Texture changes noticeably as light travels across a wall, and strong side light from a window will show every ridge in the surface beneath it, which is one reason [wall preparation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/wall-preparation/) matters more for smooth and reflective finishes than for a textured paper. Ask for enough of a large design to understand the repeat. One flower, or one fragment of a scene, does not tell you how the room feels when the whole pattern is present. For a bold design, a larger sample or a quick room elevation is worth the delay. ### How will it be cleaned? Decide this before you order, not after the first mark. Many papers are not washable at all. Grasscloth and silk are dry-dust surfaces. Contract vinyl will take a damp cloth and mild soap, but only as its own maker allows. The word “vinyl” on a sample card does not make every product suitable for every kitchen position, and “washable” means what the product’s own care sheet says it means. Washability marks are cleaning marks: even “extra-washable” or “scrubbable” describes how the surface takes a sponge, not whether it can stay wet, and none of them makes a paper suitable for a shower or a splashback. Our [aftercare page](https://www.mrwallcover.com/aftercare/) sets out the general care each family can take; the exact product’s instructions take precedence. ### Will moisture reach it? Separate decorative walls from walls exposed to splashes, steam, grease or heat. A rarely used cloakroom and a bathroom with daily steam are very different rooms. Ordinary decorative wallpaper should not be assumed to work in a direct wet zone, and wallpaper should never be used to hide a damp problem. Draw the line physically, not by label: inside a shower or bath enclosure, and the splash zone behind a basin, sink or hob, are not places for decorative paper. [Zoffany](https://zoffany.sandersondesigngroup.com/product-faqs/wallpaper-faqs/), for one, would never recommend paper “in an area which would come directly into contact with water splashes, i.e., behind a sink or shower”. A dry cloakroom wall outside that line can take paper if the wall is dry and the product’s sheet allows it. Extraction helps the room; it does not make a wet wall dry. If a wall feels cold or soft, or a stain has spread, investigate the cause before you choose a finish for it. ### Do you want an even surface or a natural one? Some clients want a very uniform wall. Others want the movement and character of a natural material. Neither is wrong, but it should be decided before ordering. [Grasscloth and other natural weaves](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/grasscloth-and-weaves/) show their panels: colour and texture vary from roll to roll, and adjacent drops can catch the light differently. That is the material, not a fault, and our [guide to grasscloth seams and variation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/grasscloth-seams-and-variation/) shows what to expect. If you like the texture but not the panel character, a woven-look vinyl or a printed texture is worth comparing. ### Room by room **Hallways and stairs.** Look at where bags, hands and furniture meet the wall. Cleanability and the chance of a local repair matter most here. Stairs add installation questions too: access, changing wall heights and where the pattern should sit as the wall climbs. The drops stay plumb while the stair rises, so the motif steps up the wall rather than following the handrail; that is geometry, not a fault, and it is why a flat-wall calculation is not a stair quantity. **Kitchens and dining rooms.** Keep the decorative wall away from the hob and the sink, and check the exact product’s suitability for the positions that will take splashes. **Bathrooms and cloakrooms.** Understand the ventilation and the existing moisture condition. Keep decorative paper out of the shower or bath enclosure and the splash zone at the basin; a direct wet zone needs a system specifically made for it. **Bedrooms and living rooms.** These usually give you the most freedom. Appearance still deserves care: side lighting emphasises texture and imperfection, and a large pattern needs a large sample. ### When does this advice stop being reliable? General family guidance cannot tell you whether a particular product is approved for a wet position, whether it carries a fire classification, or how it should be cleaned. Those answers come from that product’s own data sheet and care instructions, and from the maker where the room is unusual. If an answer is missing, keep the product on the shortlist rather than treating it as the final choice. Before you buy, collect the product reference, a photograph of the room and any dimensions you have, then ask about care, [quantity](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/quantities/), lead time and installation together. The [material finder](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/#material-finder) compares the seven families we hang by room, appearance and cleaning, and lets you save a shortlist to bring to the conversation. ### Further reading - [Zoffany: wallpaper FAQs](https://zoffany.sandersondesigngroup.com/product-faqs/wallpaper-faqs/) Your next step ### Bring it back to your room. [Read the guide ↗](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/installation-cost/) --- # Designer checklist | Mr Wallcover URL: https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/designer-specification-checklist/ Last updated: 2026-10-09 The Wallcovering Guide / planning ## A designer's wallcovering specification checklist What a wallcovering specification needs before site: maker and code, elevations, repeat and match, samples, light, lining, free-issue responsibilities and change control. By [Dorin Burcus](https://www.mrwallcover.com/about/#dorin), founder · Last updated 9 October 2026 [Send a specification](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/?audience=designer&intent=install) What should a wallcovering specification contain? Enough for the installer to set out the room without a phone call: the exact product, the elevations with the focal points marked, the repeat and match, what has been sampled, who supplies the material and who signs off the wall. The sample is often approved long before anyone decides where the first seam will fall. The checklist below brings that decision forward, so the design survives contact with the site. It is also available as a blank [specification schedule](https://www.mrwallcover.com/downloads/wallcovering-specification-schedule.csv) to fill in per room. ### Product identity - Maker, collection, product code and colourway, with the current hanging instruction attached and its date or revision noted, so everyone works from the same sheet. For Phillip Jeffries that is their [hanging instructions page](https://www.phillipjeffries.com/hanging-instructions); every maker has an equivalent. - Usable width, trimmed or untrimmed edges, roll or panel length, sale unit and minimum order. - Repeat, match type (free, straight, half-drop, panel sequence) and hanging direction, including whether alternate drops are reversed. Reversing is a direction, not a match: a half-drop hung with reversed drops is two separate instructions, and both belong on the schedule. - Backing, and the adhesive and primer the maker specifies for it. - Whether the item is confirmed or provisional, so a provisional reference is never mistaken for an order. ### Elevations and design intent - A drawn elevation for every wall that carries a scenic, a pronounced pattern, a natural weave or a textile, showing doors, windows, joinery, cornice, dado and services. - The focal point and the intended centreline: chimney breast, bed wall or window, so the set-out starts from the right place. Our guide to [hand-painted papers and murals](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/hand-painted-murals-set-out/) shows why this has to precede production. - Where seams may fall and where they must not, including internal and external corners and returns. - Whether visible natural panels are expected or a uniform finish is wanted; see [grasscloth seams and variation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/grasscloth-seams-and-variation/). - How the covering meets joinery, and whether it continues onto it; our [joinery and panels](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/joinery-wallcoverings-and-panels/) page describes that detail. ### Conditions - Room use, expected cleaning regime and the light: a textile wall lit from the side needs a truer substrate than one lit from the front. See [wall preparation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/wall-preparation/). - Lining: specified, not specified, or to the maker’s instruction. - Any fire, acoustic or wet-area requirement, with the document for the exact product rather than the collection. An [acoustic system](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/acoustic/) is only acoustic as installed to its own detail. - Whether a sample area, strike-off or mock-up is required, its purpose and who accepts it. ### Responsibilities - Who confirms the purchase quantity, and on what measurement basis. Our [quantities page](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/quantities/) explains drops, repeat and batch. - Who orders, who receives and checks the delivery, and who approves the batch. On many hotel and flagship jobs the material is free-issue from the designer, the brand or the client; we manage delivery and check it against the measure. - Who signs off wall readiness and the set-out before cutting starts. - Who decides whether a substitution is acceptable, and what evidence it needs. ### Change control - A dated revision on the schedule and the affected elevation whenever a colourway, dimension or wall position changes. - A rule that an approved sample is not enough if the final order carries a different reference. - A record of what remains unresolved, marked clearly, so the first site conversation can go straight to the decisions still needed. ### When does this checklist stop being enough? It covers what an installer needs. It does not establish a product’s fire or acoustic performance, does not replace the maker’s own specification sheet, and does not turn a family description into a product approval. For a first review, send the specification, the elevations, the project location, the programme and the procurement responsibilities to the [designers and architects page](https://www.mrwallcover.com/professionals/designers/). Where a main contractor is procuring the package, the [developer package guide](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/developer-wallcovering-package/) sets out the tender side. ### Further reading - [Phillip Jeffries: hanging instructions](https://www.phillipjeffries.com/hanging-instructions) Your next step ### Bring it back to your room. By [Dorin Burcus](https://www.mrwallcover.com/about/#dorin), founder · Last updated 9 October 2026 [Send drawings and schedule](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/?audience=developer&intent=install) Can this wallcovering package be procured, coordinated and handed over predictably? It can when the tender defines seven things: the scope, the measurement basis, the substrate handover, the programme, how changes are handled, how snagging is closed and what spares are kept. A package becomes difficult when decisions, materials and site readiness arrive in the wrong order. This checklist puts them in order, and the blank [package schedule](https://www.mrwallcover.com/downloads/wallcovering-package-schedule.csv) records them room by room. ### Scope: what is in the package? List every area with its material reference, drawing revision, quantity basis and required date. State whether the package is wallcovering only or wallcovering within a decorating package; at [Brown’s Hotel](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/browns-hotel-mayfair/) and [15 Old Bailey](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/old-bailey-hotel/) Mr Wallcover was main decorating contractor, while at [The OWO](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/raffles-london-the-owo/) the wallcovering package stood alone. Say whether preparation, lining, primers, paper on joinery, protection, access equipment and waste removal are included, so quotations can be compared on the same basis. Our guide to [what changes the cost](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/installation-cost/) explains each line. ### Measurement basis: what is being priced? State whether areas are measured net of openings, whether returns, reveals and joinery faces are measured separately, and whether the contractor or the client confirms the purchase quantity. The labour measure and the order quantity are different numbers: the order has to cover full drops, the repeat and the batch. Where the repeat is demanding, the allowance is often in the region of 20%. See the [quantities page](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/quantities/). ### Substrate handover: when is a wall “ready”? Define ready for the specified product: sound, dry to a stated reading, filled and sanded to an agreed standard, primed or not, lined or not. Name who inspects, how defects are recorded and how unresolved preparation affects the programme and the price. Period walls and new plaster both carry risk; our [wall preparation guide](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/wall-preparation/) lists what has to be checked, and the survey is a judgement on the wall as well as a measure. ### Programme: what has to finish first? Sequence wallcovering after wet trades, first-fix joinery and ceiling finishes, and before second-fix items that would damage a finished wall. Show target dates per area, the working hours and access rules, and whether the building is occupied. Delivery of free-issue goods is timed to the hang and paper is not stored in corridors; where the site is a working hotel, the [hotel specification guide](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/hotel-wallcovering-specification/) covers room release and phasing. A tender deadline is not the requested start date. ### Changes: how are substitutions and variations handled? Decide who approves a substitute product, and require appearance, installation implications and the supporting documents to be reviewed before approval. Where the project carries fire, acoustic or environmental requirements, obtain the document for the exact product and have the responsible project professional accept it; a family name on a schedule is not evidence. Keep a dated revision on the schedule and the affected elevations, and agree how additional preparation is authorised once walls are opened up. ### Sample area and snagging: how is acceptance recorded? Agree a sample area or mock-up before the repeating rooms start, in the permanent lighting where possible, record its acceptance and measure every later room against it. Agree who protects finished walls from following trades, how snags are recorded, and what counts as a material characteristic rather than a defect: visible seams and shading in natural weaves, for instance, are the material and should be settled at the sample stage. The [designer checklist](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/designer-specification-checklist/) covers the design side of that record. ### Spares and handover: what does the client keep? Hand over a room-by-room record of product, colourway, batch and care sheet, together with spare material from the same batch, stored as the maker recommends. State the limits of a later repair, since a different batch will show. The handover pack should also say what aftercare is included; our [aftercare page](https://www.mrwallcover.com/aftercare/) sets that out for the work we deliver. ### When does this checklist stop being enough? It defines the package; it does not certify compliance, insurance or contract terms, which are confirmed with current documents for the specific project. For a tender, send the drawing revisions, the room and material schedules, areas and quantities, supply responsibility, substrate information, programme, access rules, documentation requirements and the tender deadline to the [developers and main contractors page](https://www.mrwallcover.com/professionals/developers/). What is normal, what is a fault, how the set-out and the batch change the result, and what to settle before you order. By [Dorin Burcus](https://www.mrwallcover.com/about/#dorin), founder · Last updated 9 October 2026 [Discuss a natural wallcovering](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/?intent=source) Will the seams in grasscloth show? Yes. Every seam in a natural grasscloth is visible, and adjacent drops can differ in shade. That is the material, not a hanging fault, and it is the reason to look at a whole installed wall, not a sample, before you commit a room to it. The sample shows the fibres. The wall shows how the panels sit beside one another. ### Why do the panels look different from one another? Grasscloth is woven from natural fibres, sisal, raffia, arrowroot, jute and others, dyed and laid on a paper backing. Dye takes unevenly on natural fibre, so colour shifts along a roll and between rolls, and the weave itself is irregular. Once hung, each drop reads as a panel with its own tone, and light crossing the wall exaggerates the difference. Makers describe this as shading or panelling. Phillip Jeffries, whose Tweed we installed at [Four Seasons Ten Trinity Square](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/four-seasons-ten-trinity-square/), publishes a clear account of it in [The Art of Smooth Shading](https://blog.phillipjeffries.com/the-hang-guide-to-grasscloth-shading). Printed and vinyl imitations of grasscloth remove that variation. If a uniform wall is what you want, compare one; our [choosing guide](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/choosing-wallcoverings/) covers that decision. ### What is normal, and what is a fault? Normal: a visible seam line; a step in tone between neighbouring drops; a slightly different texture from one panel to the next; fibres that catch the light at a different angle on alternate drops. Not normal, and never excused by shading: an open joint you can see the wall through; a seam that has lifted; a dark line or a dull patch from adhesive or water on the face; a shiny, flattened line along a seam where a seam roller has crushed the fibre; drops from two batches on one wall; a narrow sliver at the end of a wall that could have been balanced; a crease, bubble or tear. Phillip Jeffries’ grasscloth instructions say to keep the face free of adhesive, because “both paste and excessive water will change the color”, and to smooth with a plastic smoother: “Do not use a seam roller” ([Grandview Grass instructions](https://api.phillipjeffries.com/files/instructions/Grandview%20Grass%20Hanging%20Instructions.pdf)). These are installation or handling problems and should be reported, not lived with. Our [problems and aftercare guide](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/wallcovering-problems-and-aftercare/) explains what to photograph and what not to touch. ### How does the set-out change the result? The wall widths, the doors and the windows decide where seams land. On a prominent wall, a narrow strip at one end draws the eye more than a balanced arrangement of panels, so the set-out often starts from the visual centre, the chimney breast or the bed wall, and adjusts the end panels so that neither is a sliver. Phillip Jeffries’ [Engineering a Room](https://blog.phillipjeffries.com/the-hang-how-many-wallcovering-panels-in-a-room) works the same way: start from the centre, balance the cut sizes, and avoid a narrow piece (“a mere 2-inch piece is something to be avoided”). Phillip Jeffries’ own notes do not agree on where the shading sequence starts. [The Art of Smooth Shading](https://blog.phillipjeffries.com/the-hang-guide-to-grasscloth-shading) (November 2023) says to start at a corner and “always shade darker to lighter”, one wall at a time. [Shading Tips for Naturals](https://blog.phillipjeffries.com/shading-tips) (November 2025) says to find the centre of each wall, mix light and dark drops, “Don’t start in a corner”, and shade the bolts before anything is pasted. Both are one experienced installer’s method, not a rule for every product. What they share is the useful part: shade the cut drops dry, one wall at a time, hang three and stop to look. The direction of the weave is agreed before the first length is cut; it is part of how we [install grasscloth](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/grasscloth-installation/). Should alternate drops be reversed? Sometimes, and only after trying it. In [The Art of Smooth Shading](https://blog.phillipjeffries.com/the-hang-guide-to-grasscloth-shading), Phillip Jeffries’ master installer describes reversing as “a go-to tip that he always tries”: the second drop is turned so its bottom becomes the top and like edges meet, because shade tends to run across a sheet of grasscloth. The article suggests giving it a try; it does not say it always works. The maker’s product instructions are more cautious. The [Grandview Grass instruction](https://api.phillipjeffries.com/files/instructions/Grandview%20Grass%20Hanging%20Instructions.pdf) says the installer “may reverse strips if they feel that it will produce the most even shading”. The [Tweed instruction](https://api.phillipjeffries.com/files/instructions/TWEED%2012.29.14.pdf) says hanging in the same direction, without reversing, “has produced the most even shading”, and leaves the final decision to the installer. Other products, and other makers, rule reversing in or out on their own sheets. Follow the hanging instruction for the exact product, which for Phillip Jeffries is on their [hanging instructions page](https://www.phillipjeffries.com/hanging-instructions), and judge the first two or three drops in the room’s own light before the rest goes up. ### Why does the batch matter so much? Variation between batches is larger than variation within one. Order the whole room, with a spare, from one batch number, and keep lengths from the same roll together on the same wall where the design of the room allows. Quantities for grasscloth allow for that, and for the fact that offcuts rarely blend. Our [quantities page](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/quantities/) explains why drops, not square metres, decide the order. ### Will it cope with the room? Natural grasscloth is a dry-dust surface. Moisture stains it, adhesive on the face marks it, and it is not suited to frequent wiping or splashes. In a busy family hall or beside a kitchen, a textured vinyl may be the better answer if cleanability matters more than natural fibre. The wall beneath it also matters: a sound, true, evenly porous surface, lined where the maker specifies it, because grasscloth telegraphs a poor substrate less than silk but hides nothing that is proud of the surface. See [wall preparation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/wall-preparation/). ### When does this advice stop being reliable? This guide describes natural grasscloth in general. Paper-backed, non-woven-backed and vinyl-backed weaves behave differently, and so do the adhesives they need. The product’s own hanging instruction and care sheet take precedence over anything here. If you like the texture but dislike the panel character, change the specification now; it is a much better moment than after the room is finished. ### Questions people ask #### Are visible seams in grasscloth a fault? No. Visible seams and a change of shade between neighbouring drops are properties of natural grasscloth. Shading never excuses an open joint, a lifted seam, adhesive staining on the face, a shiny line crushed by a seam roller, or a tear. Those are faults and should be reported. #### Should alternate drops of grasscloth be reversed? Try it only where the product's instruction allows it, and judge it on the wall. Phillip Jeffries' installer suggests trying reversed drops because shade often runs across the width of the cloth, but the maker's own Tweed instruction found hanging in one direction gave the most even shading, and leaves the final decision to the installer. Follow the instruction for the exact product and look at the first three drops in the room's light. #### Can grasscloth go in a bathroom or a busy hallway? Natural grasscloth is a dry-dust surface that moisture stains and frequent wiping damages. In a wet room or a heavily used passage, compare a textured vinyl or a printed texture, and check the exact product's care sheet before deciding. ### Further reading - [Phillip Jeffries: The Art of Smooth Shading](https://blog.phillipjeffries.com/the-hang-guide-to-grasscloth-shading) - [Phillip Jeffries: Shading Tips for Naturals](https://blog.phillipjeffries.com/shading-tips) - [Phillip Jeffries: Engineering a Room](https://blog.phillipjeffries.com/the-hang-how-many-wallcovering-panels-in-a-room) - [Phillip Jeffries: Grandview Grass hanging instructions](https://api.phillipjeffries.com/files/instructions/Grandview%20Grass%20Hanging%20Instructions.pdf) - [Phillip Jeffries: Tweed hanging instructions](https://api.phillipjeffries.com/files/instructions/TWEED%2012.29.14.pdf) - [Phillip Jeffries: hanging instructions](https://www.phillipjeffries.com/hanging-instructions) Your next step ### Bring it back to your room. By [Dorin Burcus](https://www.mrwallcover.com/about/#dorin), founder · Last updated 9 October 2026 [Discuss a scenic layout](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/?audience=designer&intent=install) When should a scenic paper be planned? Before it is ordered, and before the room’s dimensions are final. A hand-painted or panoramic paper is a composition, not a repeating pattern: the panels are made to the elevations, and the question is not whether they cover the wall but what remains visible once the doors, the corners and the furniture are taken into account. Change the plan after production and the remedies are cropping or re-ordering; a hand-painted set cannot be stretched to make up the difference. ### Which wall, and what is the focal point? Draw each wall first. Record the finished width and height, and the position of every door, window, socket, switch, radiator, cornice and piece of joinery. For a wraparound scene, draw the walls in sequence and mark the corners. Then decide what deserves the centre. The middle of the wall is not always the visual centre: a bed, a chimneypiece or a dining table often fixes where the main motif should sit, and a recognisable feature in the design should not disappear behind a wardrobe. This is how we set out [hand-painted papers](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/hand-painted-wallpaper-installation/) and [murals](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/mural-installation/): from a fixed point, before the first panel goes up. ### How does the panel sequence work? Scenic papers arrive as numbered panels of a stated width, hung in order. The maker’s layout drawing shows where each panel begins and how the scene continues around a corner; the installer’s set-out shows where that layout meets the real wall. Agree both before production, including whether a corner falls on a panel edge or inside a panel, and how a door opening is handled, since the scene has to continue correctly above it. Do not re-order numbered panels on a continuous wall to move a motif: the sequence is the artwork. [de Gournay’s hanging instructions](https://degournay.com/uploads/technical/document/2026_Hanging_Instructions-After-2025.pdf) say panels “must be hung in their correct sequence on continuous wall sections”, and that only a break in the wall, such as a door or window rising close to the design height, gives “the opportunity for the sequence to be altered”. Keep the layout on site and check the delivered panels against it, dry and before any paste, before anything is cut. A sequence or sizing problem is easy to resolve at that stage and expensive afterwards. ### What happens at doors, windows and corners? Every interruption removes part of the picture. Decide where the loss is least painful: usually behind a door that stands open, above a window, or in a corner that furniture hides. Ask the maker how they handle cropping and panel dimensions before production. ### Can the design be stretched to fit? Not a hand-painted or hand-printed set. Its panels are made at a fixed width, numbered and hung in sequence. If the wall and the set disagree, the choices are to crop a designed edge, add panels or plain ground that the studio actually offers, or change the wall; pulling the image to fit is not one of them. On the wall, forcing a pasted panel to close a gap is a fault: [de Gournay](https://degournay.com/uploads/technical/document/2026_Hanging_Instructions-After-2025.pdf) warns that it “stretches the wallcovering and upon drying will lead to shrinkage”. Some digital prints can be adjusted, and then only in the file, before printing. A made-to-measure digital mural is printed to the dimensions you supply: [Rebel Walls](https://rebelwalls.com/uk/bespoke-wallpaper), for example, prints to the measurements ordered, lets you crop the image in its editor and accepts only high-resolution images, and [asks for 10 cm](https://rebelwalls.com/en-ca/how-to-measure-for-wallpaper) to be added to the width and height for trimming. Whether a particular image can be scaled, and by how much, depends on its resolution and the supplier, so ask them to confirm it. Keep the proportions: a scene scaled up loses the detail you chose it for, and one distorted to a new shape looks wrong at once. ### Should the dimensions be the finished dimensions? Yes. If the room is still being built, decided or re-plastered, involve the installer and the maker before the dimensions go to production. Skirting height, cornice depth and the thickness of a new lining all change the finished wall. We measure on site, take out the openings and give the supplier the dimensions of the wall that will actually be hung; our [mural installation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/mural-installation/) page explains that survey. ### What should the wall be like? Hand-painted papers need a sound wall, a patient set-out and time. Some are hung over a lining and some are specified without one; we follow the maker’s instruction. The surface has to be true, because a scenic paper is usually smooth and lit from the side. See [wall preparation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/wall-preparation/) for what has to be checked, and plan the filling, lining and drying time into the programme rather than discovering it on the day the panels arrive. ### Can a visualisation settle it? A room preview helps with placement and overall effect. It cannot show real colour, the texture of the paper or the way the surface takes light. Physical samples, a strike-off or the maker’s proof still decide colour, and a full-size paper mock-up of one panel on the wall is often the cheapest insurance on a large commission. ### When does this advice stop being reliable? Each maker has its own panel widths, overlaps, hanging direction and adhesive requirements, and some papers must not be trimmed on site at all. The maker’s hanging instruction and layout drawing take precedence over this guide. For a commission with several rooms, record the elevations, focal points and panel expectations in a schedule; our [designer specification checklist](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/designer-specification-checklist/) has the fields, and the [hand-painted](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/hand-painted/) and [murals](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/murals/) material pages describe what each family needs. ### Further reading - [de Gournay: wallpaper hanging instructions (2026)](https://degournay.com/uploads/technical/document/2026_Hanging_Instructions-After-2025.pdf) - [Rebel Walls: bespoke wallpaper](https://rebelwalls.com/uk/bespoke-wallpaper) - [Rebel Walls: how to measure for a custom mural](https://rebelwalls.com/en-ca/how-to-measure-for-wallpaper) Your next step ### Bring it back to your room. By [Dorin Burcus](https://www.mrwallcover.com/about/#dorin), founder · Last updated 9 October 2026 [Discuss phased works](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/?audience=hotel&intent=install) Can wallcoverings be installed while the hotel stays open? Yes, and most of our hotel work has been in live buildings: [Brown’s Hotel](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/browns-hotel-mayfair/) never stopped welcoming guests across a two-year decorating programme, and [Raffles London at The OWO](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/raffles-london-the-owo/) and the hotel at [15 Old Bailey](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/old-bailey-hotel/) were fitted out room by room. The specification has to answer four questions that a residential job does not: how the wall will be cleaned, how the rooms will be released, how every room will match the sample room, and what the building needs to keep for maintenance afterwards. ### Which material suits a guest room, and which a corridor? Corridors take luggage, trolleys and shoulders all day; guest rooms take chair backs and the occasional suitcase; reception and restaurant walls take hands and cleaning. [Contract vinyl](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/contract-vinyl/) is the usual specification where wear and cleaning come first, and at The OWO the install was a bespoke Vescom wallcovering to walls and parts of the joinery. Natural weaves and textiles still have a place where the finish matters more than wipeability: Phillip Jeffries Tweed and Omexco at [Four Seasons Ten Trinity Square](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/four-seasons-ten-trinity-square/), for instance. The decision is the room’s actual use, not the room’s name. ### What does the cleaning regime need? Agree the housekeeping method before the product is chosen, then confirm the exact product’s cleaning instructions match it. Contract vinyl will take a damp cloth and mild soap; it will not take abrasive creams, neat bleach or scourers. A textile wall needs a dry method. Hand a care sheet per product to housekeeping at handover, because “wallpaper” is too broad a category for one cleaning method. Our [aftercare page](https://www.mrwallcover.com/aftercare/) gives the general care by family; the product’s own sheet takes precedence. ### Why insist on a sample room? A sample room settles appearance, seam position, the junction with joinery and skirting, and the cleaning test, before the same work is repeated across a floor. At 15 Old Bailey the programme ran from a sample room in November 2022 to final touches in August 2024, across 110 rooms. Record who accepts the sample room and on what basis, and keep that acceptance with the project record. Everything that follows is measured against it. ### How is batch and shading consistency kept across a floor? Order each run of rooms from one batch, check the batch on every delivery against the measure, and allocate rolls to rooms before cutting so that no room mixes batches. With a bespoke production run, consistency from roll to roll and room to room is paramount; at The OWO, batches were checked and managed so that corridors of rooms read as one. Natural textiles vary more than vinyl, and shading on them was checked continuously at Four Seasons so the walls read as a single surface. ### How is the work phased around guests? Identify which rooms can be released together, the permitted working hours, the delivery routes and where material can be stored. Delivery of free-issue goods is timed to the hang; paper is not left in corridors. The work is contained, moves around the house’s bookings, and the area is left tidy each day, with a project leader on site every day and, on a longer commission, a forward plan agreed each week. Include guest-facing protection, noise limits and the daily handover expectations in the scope, not as a courtesy afterwards. ### What documentation does the project need? Where the project sets fire, acoustic or environmental requirements, obtain the current test or classification document for the exact product, backing and installation method proposed, and have the responsible project professional confirm acceptance. “Contract wallcovering” or “vinyl” on a sample card is not evidence of any classification, and neither is this guide. A classification belongs to the build-up that was tested, the wallcovering, adhesive and substrate together, so a substitute product or adhesive needs its own evidence. A guest room, a public corridor and a protected stair can carry different requirements; there is no single class that “hotels need”. Whether an older British classification satisfies a project is for the responsible designer, fire engineer or building-control route to decide, not the installer. The adhesive and primer are part of the specified system: for Vescom products, Vescom lists the correct ones per product on its [adhesives and accessories page](https://vescom.com/en/adhesives-accessories), and other makers’ instructions do the same for theirs. ### What should the hotel keep after handover? A room-by-room record of the installed product, colourway, batch and care sheet; spare material from the same batch, kept dry with its batch label and stored as the maker recommends; and a clear note of the limits of matching a later repair, since a patch from a different batch will show. Our [problems and aftercare guide](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/wallcovering-problems-and-aftercare/) explains what to record when something goes wrong. ### When does this advice stop being reliable? It describes practice on London hotel refurbishments in occupied buildings. It does not certify any product, and it does not replace the specifier’s review of fire, acoustic or wet-area requirements. Why there is no honest price per roll: measured area, repeat and wastage, wall preparation, the material, access and protection, and what a quotation should include. By [Dorin Burcus](https://www.mrwallcover.com/about/#dorin), founder · Last updated 9 October 2026 [Request a scoped quotation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/?intent=install) What does wallpaper installation cost? There is no honest flat rate per roll. The figure follows the measured wall area after openings are taken off, the pattern repeat and the wastage it creates, the state of the walls, the material, and the access and protection the room needs. Two rooms with the same floor area can be quite different days of work: a plain contract vinyl in an empty flat is not a hand-painted scenic in an occupied house, or a hotel corridor that can only be reached between guests. This guide explains each factor so you can compare quotations on the same basis. It deliberately contains no price bands. ### How is the area measured? We measure on site, or from drawings when the programme needs it. Skirting, cornice, joinery, doors and windows come out of the area; what is left is the wall that will actually be hung. The labour measurement is not the same as the purchase quantity: a quotation prices the work, while the order has to cover full drops, the repeat and the batch. Our [quantities page](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/quantities/) explains the difference and why openings rarely save a whole drop. ### Why does the pattern repeat cost money? A large or demanding repeat wastes material at the top of every drop, and a half-drop match wastes more. Where the repeat is demanding, the allowance is often in the region of 20%. The repeat also changes the time: each drop is matched by eye, and a room set out around its focal points takes longer than a plain paper run from a corner. At [Brown’s Hotel](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/browns-hotel-mayfair/), Adam’s Eden carries a 108.5 cm half-drop repeat, and every room was set out from its chimneypiece, doorcase or bed wall so the pattern met the cornice with composure. ### What preparation is included? Installing onto a sound, prepared surface is one job. Stripping old coverings, repairing damage, filling, sanding and lining an uncertain substrate is another, and it can be the larger part of the time on a period wall. A useful quotation says what preparation is included, what is subject to inspection once the old paper is off, and how extra work would be authorised. Lining usually means another visit, because the liner has to dry before the finish goes on ([Farrow & Ball](https://www.farrow-ball.com/how-to-guide/wallpaper/preparing-wallpaper) asks for at least 12 hours), so a price that is silent on lining is not comparable with one that includes it. Our [wall preparation guide](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/wall-preparation/) lists what has to be checked. ### How does the material change the work? A product code is more useful than a description, because the code decides the labour: trimmed or untrimmed edges, paste-the-wall or paste-the-paper, a lining or none, drops shaded dry before hanging, a panel layout, or the maker’s own adhesive system. Narrow printed rolls, wide contract vinyl, natural weaves that need clean hands and a particular adhesive, delicate silks, and bespoke scenic panels each introduce different handling, set-out and risk. Some are specified over a lining, some are not. A [hand-painted scenic](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/hand-painted-murals-set-out/) is priced by the panel sequence and the time to set it out, not by the roll. Where you have not yet chosen the material, say so: it is a normal starting point, not a reason to guess. ### What about access, protection and the awkward parts? Stair access, high walls, deep reveals, small returns, paper on joinery and junctions with cornice or panelling can matter as much as the large flat areas. Protection of floors, furniture and finished joinery is part of the hang, not an optional extra, and in an occupied home or a working hotel the work has to be contained and tidied daily. Limited working hours, night working or room-release sequences all belong in the scope from the start; our [hotel specification guide](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/hotel-wallcovering-specification/) covers how a phased programme is planned. ### What should a complete quotation include? Check whether a price includes the survey, preparation, lining and primers, adhesive, protection, access equipment, waste removal, and the aftercare visit. Material supply and installation should be shown separately, so a free-issue paper and a sourced one are comparable. Parking, travel and VAT treatment should be clear. A low headline rate is not a useful comparison if essential work sits outside it; a premium price needs a clear scope rather than vague promises. ### When does this guide stop being reliable? It cannot tell you what your room will cost, because it has not seen your room. Exterior work, listed buildings, acoustic systems and anything with a fire or specification requirement need their own scope. For a first discussion, send the location, room photographs, approximate dimensions, the product reference if you have one, whether it is already ordered and from one batch, and your preferred timing. The most useful photographs show each wall square-on, a stair from below and from the landing, the ceiling height, and the way into the building: lift, common parts or parking. Developers and main contractors tendering a package will find the measurement basis and scope matrix in our [developer package guide](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/developer-wallcovering-package/). ### Questions people ask #### Is there a price per roll for wallpaper installation? No. The figure follows the measured wall area after openings are taken off, the pattern repeat and the wastage it creates, the state of the walls, the material, and the access and protection the room needs. A quotation prices a surveyed scope, not a roll. #### What should a wallpaper installation quotation include? Whether the survey, preparation, lining and primers, adhesive, protection, access equipment, waste removal and the aftercare visit are included, with material supply shown separately from installation, and parking, travel and VAT treatment made clear. #### Does the pattern repeat change the cost? Yes. A large or half-drop repeat wastes material at the top of each drop, so the order is larger, and matching each drop by eye and setting the room out from its focal points takes longer than a plain paper run from a corner. ### Further reading - [Farrow & Ball: preparing wallpaper](https://www.farrow-ball.com/how-to-guide/wallpaper/preparing-wallpaper) Your next step ### Bring it back to your room. [Read the guide ↗](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/developer-wallcovering-package/) --- # How much wallpaper should you order? | Mr Wallcover URL: https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/quantities/ Last reviewed: 2026-10-09 The Wallcovering Guide / planning ## How much wallpaper should you order? Count the drops, not the square metres. Wallpaper is cut in full-height lengths, so the number of rolls follows the width of the wall, the height plus trim, the pattern repeat and the usable length of a roll. The calculator below works that out for plain and straight-match rectangular walls. It is not a purchase quantity and it is not a quotation. [Ask for a surveyed quantity](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/?intent=install) ### Why width decides the number of drops A drop is one full-height length of paper. Divide the wall width by the usable width of the roll and round up: that is the number of drops. Each drop is cut to the wall height plus a trimming allowance at the top and bottom, and a roll yields only as many whole drops as fit into its length. Round the drops up, the drops per roll down and the rolls up. Offcuts shorter than a drop are rarely usable on the same wall. Take a simple wall, as an illustration rather than an order: 5.00 metres wide and 2.70 metres high, with a free-match paper on a roll labelled 10.05 metres long and 0.53 metres wide. Allow 50 millimetres for trimming at the top and 50 at the bottom, so each cut length is 2.80 metres. The width needs 10 drops: 5.00 ÷ 0.53 is 9.43, so nine full widths cover 4.77 metres and the tenth drop is a strip about 0.23 metres wide that still uses a full 2.80-metre length. Each roll yields 3 drops, because 10.05 ÷ 2.80 is 3.59 and the remainder is too short for a fourth. Ten drops at three per roll is 4 rolls. Dividing the wall area by the roll area gives a different answer. The wall is 13.5 square metres and the roll about 5.33, so 13.5 ÷ 5.33 is 2.53, which rounds up to 3 rolls: one short, because the area method counts the offcuts and the narrow last strip as if they could be used. Enter the figures above and the calculator gives 4. The example assumes a plumb, square wall, the usable dimensions on the label, a free match, no defects and no spare; a real order adds a spare from the same batch. ### How the pattern repeat changes the cut length A patterned paper has to be cut so the design lines up across the seam. With a straight match, every drop starts at the same point in the pattern, so the cut length rounds up to a whole number of repeats. On a 2.40-metre wall with the same 0.10-metre trim, a plain paper needs a 2.50-metre cut, and a 10.05-metre roll gives four drops with 5 centimetres to spare. With a 0.64-metre straight-match repeat, the cut rounds up to four repeats, 2.56 metres, and the same roll gives only three, because 10.05 ÷ 2.56 is 3.93. The repeat has cost a drop on every roll, which is why it is counted as a length and not added as a percentage. The calculator applies that rounding for straight match. A half-drop match offsets alternate drops by half a repeat, and large or irregular designs may need the pattern to sit at a particular height, above a dado or centred on a chimney breast. Those decisions change the waste in ways a single percentage cannot predict, which is why the calculator refuses half-drop rather than guessing. On the [services page](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/) we describe how a survey sets out the room and allows for the repeat. ### Do doors and windows save a drop? Usually less than people hope. The drops either side of a window still run full height, and the short pieces above and below it must keep the correct pattern relationship with their neighbours. Only a wide opening, or a plain paper where any offcut will do, reliably saves material. The calculator leaves openings in for that reason. A survey takes them out where it is safe to. ### Why order everything from one batch Rolls from different production batches can differ slightly in colour, and that difference shows most at a seam. Order the whole room, including a spare, from one batch number, and check the batch on delivery before anything is cut. A spare roll kept from the same batch is also the only realistic way to make a later repair blend in. ### When the calculator stops being reliable Stop trusting a formula when the wall is not a simple rectangle, when the paper is a mural or a set of panels, or when the pattern needs a set-out. Stairwells have sloping lines and changing heights. Hand-painted and panoramic papers are made to the elevations and ordered by panel, not by roll; our guide to [setting out hand-painted papers and murals](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/hand-painted-murals-set-out/) explains what has to be decided first. Designers specifying several rooms can use the [specification checklist](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/designer-specification-checklist/) to record repeat, match and usable width for every product. Whatever the calculator says, the maker's instruction and a surveyed set-out take precedence. Keep the purchase quantity separate from any labour measurement in a quotation: our guide to [what changes the cost of installation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/installation-cost/) explains the difference. Your next step ### Send the wall, and we will count the drops. A photograph, the dimensions you have and the product reference are enough for a first quantity. How to tell whether a wall is ready for wallcovering: old coatings, dryness, soundness, filling and sanding, lining paper, priming and what needs a site inspection. By [Dorin Burcus](https://www.mrwallcover.com/about/#dorin), founder · Last updated 9 October 2026 [Discuss wall preparation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/?intent=prepare) Is the wall ready? It is ready when it is sound, dry, smooth enough for the material, evenly porous and free of anything that will come away later. Most walls fail at least one of those on first inspection, and the expensive paper does not fix any of them. A fine finish makes an uneven wall more noticeable, especially under side light or with a smooth, reflective material such as [silk](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/silk-and-textiles/) or a plain contract vinyl. ### What does “sound” mean? The surface has to hold. Old paint that is chalky or poorly bonded, filler sitting on dust, distemper, and the paper backing left from a previous hang will all let go under the pull of a drying wallcovering. The wall can look fine and still fail this test, which is why we look at the behaviour of the existing coating rather than its colour. A scratch test and a damp cloth tell you more than a photograph. ### Is it dry? Fresh plaster, new filler and recent repairs need time and the right conditions before they are covered. A calendar date is not proof: a moisture reading is. Where there is any history of damp, a cold patch or a stain that has spread, the cause is investigated before anything decorative goes near it. Our [aftercare page](https://www.mrwallcover.com/aftercare/) explains why humidity and settling matter after the hang as well as before it. ### Is it smooth enough for this material? Smooth enough depends on the covering. A textured grasscloth forgives small undulations that a silk or a plain vinyl will show in raking light. Where the specification includes it, preparation means stripping old paper, sanding with dust extraction, and making good cracks and uneven surfaces before anything decorative goes up. Period walls can take days of filling and sanding before they are true. At [Brown’s Hotel](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/browns-hotel-mayfair/), the hours spent filling and priming decided everything that followed on wide-width printed papers. ### What is lining paper for, and does this wall need it? Lining paper is a plain paper hung before the finish. It does three jobs: it gives the finish one even, consistently absorbent surface instead of a patchwork of old paint, filler and plaster; it bridges hairline cracks and fine filler lines so they do not telegraph through; and it lets the joints of the finish sit away from anything beneath. It will not hold a coating that is letting go, cure damp, or straighten a wall that is out of true. Those are fixed first. Whether it is needed is the maker’s call. [de Gournay](https://degournay.com/uploads/technical/document/2026_Hanging_Instructions-After-2025.pdf) says “all walls should be lined with plain white 1000 or 1200 grade” lining paper, hung with the same adhesive as the panels, and that cross-lining “is not necessary so long as the vertical joints between the lining panels do not meet up” with the joints of the finish. [Farrow & Ball](https://www.farrow-ball.com/how-to-guide/wallpaper/preparing-wallpaper) recommends horizontal cross-lining “around 1200–1400 grade”, left for at least 12 hours before hanging. [Zoffany](https://zoffany.sandersondesigngroup.com/product-faqs/wallpaper-faqs/) recommends cross-lining too. Most contract vinyls are hung without a liner. Where lining is used, its joints never coincide with the joints of the finish, and it is dry before the top paper goes on. ### Why prime or size, and with what? A primer or size controls suction so the adhesive dries at the right rate, and on vinyl and contract products it is what lets the covering be stripped cleanly years later. The right primer and adhesive are a pairing chosen for the wallcovering and the substrate together, and the product’s instruction names them. [de Gournay](https://degournay.com/uploads/technical/document/2026_Hanging_Instructions-After-2025.pdf) says new plaster and very absorbent surfaces “must be properly sized”, warns against oil-based primers that stay flexible, and says not to prime over its lining paper. [Farrow & Ball](https://www.farrow-ball.com/how-to-guide/wallpaper/preparing-wallpaper) asks for newly plastered walls to be “carefully sized”. [Zoffany](https://zoffany.sandersondesigngroup.com/product-faqs/wallpaper-faqs/) does not recommend thinning its paste “unless you’re sizing a porous wall”. Phillip Jeffries asks for “a hard, acrylic, pigmented, wall-protecting primer” made for wallcovering installation under its grasscloths ([Grandview Grass instructions](https://api.phillipjeffries.com/files/instructions/Grandview%20Grass%20Hanging%20Instructions.pdf)). Vescom, whose bespoke wallcovering we installed at [Raffles London at The OWO](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/raffles-london-the-owo/), specifies its own Primer/Sealer, diluted or neat depending on the substrate, and its own adhesives on its [adhesives and accessories page](https://vescom.com/en/adhesives-accessories); that applies to Vescom wallcoverings, not to a residential paper or silk. What none of them asks for is neat PVA brushed on as a universal sealer. It is the common shortcut, and it fails in a known way: it dries to a sealed, slick film that a water-based paste cannot soak into or grip, so the paper slides, dries slowly and can let go at the seams. Size or prime as the product’s instruction says. There is no single sealer or adhesive that solves every situation. ### What needs a site inspection? Photographs plan the job; they do not answer every question. Anything that cannot be confirmed until the old paper is off, a test area is tried or a moisture reading is taken should be recorded as uncertain in the scope, with an agreed way to authorise extra work. Typical cases: walls previously painted with gloss or a vinyl silk emulsion, walls with past water damage, new plaster that has not yet dried through, and walls where the specification calls for paper on joinery. ### How does preparation affect the programme? Preparation discovered late moves the installation date, and that is expensive when deliveries, decorators, joinery and occupancy have already been arranged. Ask for preparation to be described separately in the quotation, with what is included and what is subject to inspection; our guide to [what changes the cost](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/installation-cost/) shows how. The survey is also a judgement on the wall: if it is not ready for the material specified, we say so before anyone orders the last drop. ### When does this advice stop being reliable? This is general guidance for domestic and hotel walls in reasonable condition. Damp, structural movement, lime plaster, historic fabric and any wall where the specification carries a fire or acoustic requirement need the product’s own instructions and, often, the specifier’s confirmation. The maker’s hanging instruction for the actual product takes precedence over everything on this page. ### Questions people ask #### Can you hang new wallpaper over old wallpaper? Not reliably. Old paper, and the backing left after stripping, can let go under the pull of a drying wallcovering, and any joint or texture beneath shows through a fine finish. Where the specification includes preparation, the old covering is stripped and the wall made good first. #### Does wallpaper need lining paper? Lining paper is a plain paper hung before the finish to give it an even, consistently absorbent surface: it evens out porosity, bridges hairline cracks and fine filler lines, and keeps the joints of the finish off anything beneath. It does not hold a failing coating, cure damp or straighten a wall that is out of true. Whether it is needed depends on the maker: de Gournay asks for all walls to be lined, Farrow & Ball recommends horizontal cross-lining, and most contract vinyls are hung without. We follow the specification for the product rather than a house rule. #### How do you know a wall is dry enough? By a moisture reading, not by the calendar. New plaster, fresh filler and any wall with a history of damp are checked before they are covered, and the cause of any damp is investigated rather than hidden behind a new finish. ### Further reading - [de Gournay: wallpaper hanging instructions (2026)](https://degournay.com/uploads/technical/document/2026_Hanging_Instructions-After-2025.pdf) - [Farrow & Ball: preparing wallpaper](https://www.farrow-ball.com/how-to-guide/wallpaper/preparing-wallpaper) - [Zoffany: wallpaper FAQs](https://zoffany.sandersondesigngroup.com/product-faqs/wallpaper-faqs/) - [Phillip Jeffries: Grandview Grass hanging instructions](https://api.phillipjeffries.com/files/instructions/Grandview%20Grass%20Hanging%20Instructions.pdf) - [Vescom: adhesives and accessories (Vescom products only)](https://vescom.com/en/adhesives-accessories) Your next step ### Bring it back to your room. By [Dorin Burcus](https://www.mrwallcover.com/about/#dorin), founder · Last updated 9 October 2026 [Request aftercare](https://www.mrwallcover.com/aftercare/) A bubble has appeared, an edge has lifted or there is a mark on the wall: what now? Photograph it, note when it appeared and what changed nearby, and do not touch it. Most wallcovering problems are easier to diagnose and repair before anyone has cut a bubble, pressed an edge back with the wrong adhesive or tried a household cleaner. The symptom tells you less than the cause, and similar symptoms come from quite different causes. ### What should you record? - An overall photograph of the wall and a close-up of the problem, in daylight if possible. - When it appeared, and whether it has grown. - What changed: the heating came on, a window was left open, a room was closed up, a leak or condensation nearby, a knock or furniture moved against the wall. - Whether the wall feels cold, soft or damp to the touch. - The product reference, batch and installation date if you have them. That is enough for a first assessment, and it is what the [aftercare page](https://www.mrwallcover.com/aftercare/) asks for. A photograph helps us see whether we are looking at the hang, a knock or the building. ### Why not just fix it? Cutting a bubble and injecting adhesive, or pressing a lifted edge back with whatever glue is to hand, can turn a small, invisible repair into a visible one and makes the cause harder to find afterwards. A household PVA worked into a lifting seam can stain the face, and a seam roller run over grasscloth or silk crushes the fibre into a shiny line. A bubble that appeared with the heating season may be the paper easing as it dries and may settle; a bubble over a cold, soft patch is a damp problem that no repair will hold. An edge lifting at every seam along one wall points to the substrate or the adhesive; one edge behind a door points to a knock. ### Is it a fault, or the material? Natural seams in grasscloth, silk and hand-painted papers, and shading between drops of a natural weave, are properties of the material; our [grasscloth guide](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/grasscloth-seams-and-variation/) shows what is normal. A seam that has let go, a lifted edge, a crease, a tear or adhesive on the face is different, and should be reported. Paper and textile move with the moisture in the room: a new hang eases as it dries and may ease again when the heating starts or a closed room meets damp weather, which is why a return visit waits for the room to settle rather than happening the next morning. ### How should each material be cleaned? Start by knowing which product is on the wall; keep the reference and the maker’s care sheet with the project record. When a mark appears, stop. Household cleaners, steam and abrasive sponges are how a small mark becomes a large one. - **Silk and textiles:** dust with a clean, dry, soft cloth. No water, no solvent, no steam. A stain needs a conservator. - **Grasscloth and natural weaves:** dry dust only, lightly. Moisture stains the fibre and can swell the weave. - **Hand-painted papers and murals:** no liquids. Dust dry, and rarely. Keep direct sun off a scenic paper where you can; it fades unevenly. - **Contract vinyl:** a barely damp cloth with a drop of mild soap, then dry. No abrasive creams, no neat bleach, no scourers. - **Acoustic wallcoverings:** low-suction vacuum with a soft head. Do not soak the fabric or the perforations. Those are the general methods for each family; the exact product’s care sheet takes precedence, and an unknown product is treated as not washable. A washability mark describes how the surface takes a sponge, not whether it can stay wet: even a scrubbable paper is not a splashback. Our [aftercare page](https://www.mrwallcover.com/aftercare/) has the full care notes by material. ### What should you not do to the room? Do not steam-clean wallcoverings. Do not point a fan heater at one seam or stand a humidifier against the paper. Keep the heat steady and the room ventilated. If a stain spreads or a wall feels cold and soft, look for damp before you look for a decorator; a repair over a wet substrate will fail again, and our [wall preparation guide](https://www.mrwallcover.com/advice/wall-preparation/) explains why. ### What can a repair realistically achieve? A local repair is often possible. An exact match is not always possible: ageing, light, batch differences and natural variation all show at the edge of a patch, and a spare from the same batch is the only reliable source. A patch on a plain paper can be sound and still show in side light, and grasscloth and silk rarely patch invisibly. Ask whether the repair will remain visible before agreeing it, and keep approved spare material dry, with its batch label, stored as the maker recommends. ### When is an inspection needed? When the cause is not obvious from the photographs; when the problem is spreading; when there is any sign of damp; or when the wallcovering is on a listed, acoustic or specified system where the detail matters. For work we installed, the aftercare page sets out what the return visit and the workmanship guarantee cover and where the building takes over from the hang. For wallcoverings installed by others, send the same photographs and we will say whether a repair is possible. ### Questions people ask #### Should I cut a bubble in wallpaper and glue it down? No. Photograph it, note when it appeared and what changed nearby, and leave it. A bubble that came with the heating season may settle as the paper dries; one over a cold, soft patch is a damp problem. Cutting it first makes the cause harder to find and the repair more visible. #### Can I wipe grasscloth or silk with a damp cloth? No. Silk and natural weaves are dry-dust surfaces; moisture stains them. Contract vinyl will take a barely damp cloth and mild soap, then drying. When in doubt, treat the product as not washable and check its own care sheet. #### When does a wallcovering problem need a site inspection? When the cause is not clear from photographs, when it is spreading, when there is any sign of damp, or when the covering is part of a listed, acoustic or specified system where the detail matters. Aftercare is one of the five parts of a Mr Wallcover commission. The return visit is included, and the twelve-month workmanship guarantee is set out below. The surface, close to. Brown's Hotel, Mayfair. ### Return inspection About four to six weeks after we finish, we come back. By then the heating, the ventilation and the humidity have had a chance to move the paper. That movement is settling. It is the reason for the visit. We look at seams, edges, corners and any joinery that was covered. Touch-ups that belong to the hang are done on that visit. There is no call-out charge for this inspection. ### Seams and edges A seam that opens, or an edge that lifts, because of the way the material was hung, is our work to put right. We re-adhere, trim and touch in. We do not paint over a problem and hope the light is kind. Natural seams in grasscloth, silk and hand-painted goods are a property of the material. We will have said so before the hang. Those are not faults. A seam that has let go is different, and we treat it as such. ### Priority repair call-out During the guarantee, a call about our own workmanship comes ahead of new enquiries. The contact page is the quickest way. A photograph helps us see whether we are looking at the hang, a knock, or the building. If it is the hang, we book the return as a priority. If it is the building, we will say that plainly rather than charge you for a repair that will fail again. ### Humidity and settling Paper and textile move with the moisture in the room. A new hang will ease as it dries, and it may ease again when the heating season starts or when a closed room is opened to damp weather. That is ordinary. It is why the return visit waits four to six weeks, rather than the next morning. Keep the heat steady and the room ventilated. A cold, damp wall, a leak above a ceiling, or a fan heater pointed at one seam is how edges lift. Do not steam-clean wallcoverings. Do not sit a humidifier against the paper. If a stain spreads, or a wall feels cold and soft, look for damp before you look for a decorator. We would rather be called early than asked to hang the same wall twice over a wet substrate. ### Care and cleaning This is general guidance for the materials we hang. Where the maker has issued a care note, that note leads. When a mark appears, stop. Household cleaners, steam and magic sponges are how a small mark becomes a large one. #### Silk Dust with a clean, dry, soft cloth. No water, no solvent, no steam. A stain needs a conservator, not a detergent. Keep handbags, chair backs and sun off the cloth where you can. #### Grasscloth and natural weaves Dry dust only, and lightly. Moisture stains grasscloth and can swell the weave. Seams and variation in colour are part of the material. Do not try to scrub them even. #### Fabric walling Vacuum on a low suction with a soft brush head, if the maker allows it. Do not soak the textile. Spot treatment belongs to a specialist, tested somewhere that will not show. #### Vinyl and contract wallcoverings Wipe with a barely damp cloth and a drop of mild soap, then dry. No abrasive creams, no neat bleach, no scourers. Contract vinyl will take more than silk. It will not take a careless bucket. #### Hand-painted papers No liquids on the surface. Dust dry, and rarely. Direct sun fades a scenic paper unevenly. Marks, flaking and water damage need a paper conservator. We can help you find the right person. We will not experiment on a de Gournay or Fromental-style panel. #### Murals Follow the maker's care note for that print or that hand-made piece. Do not use household spray cleaner. If a panel is damaged, photograph it and call us before anyone tries to patch it. #### Acoustic wallcoverings and panels Vacuum dust from the face with low suction and a soft head. Do not soak the fabric or the perforations. Water and heavy adhesive at the edge can close the surface the panel was specified to keep open. Support ### Send a note about existing work. Use this for a seam, a repair, or a question about a finished room. It is kept apart from a new installation enquiry. Send a photograph and we will say whether it is the hang, a knock or the building before anything else. ### Twelve-month workmanship guarantee For twelve months from completion, Mr Wallcover guarantees the workmanship of the hang. That covers seams opening, edges lifting, and adhesive failure that comes from the way we hung the material. It does not cover building movement, damp, leaks, or a substrate that fails. It does not cover damage by later trades, impact, furniture, or cleaning the material cannot take. Some people call this a warranty. It is the same promise: twelve months on our workmanship, and a clear line where the building takes over from the hang. What carries across from our hotel work is the method: a written scope by room, the same core team throughout, and a contained, tidy work area in a house that is still lived in. Preparation is part of the scope where it is specified: stripping old paper, sanding with dust extraction, and making good before anything decorative goes up. Some papers are hung over a lining. Some, including certain murals, are specified without one. Aftercare is included. Enough to cover the pattern repeat and the wastage it creates. Where the repeat is demanding, that allowance is often in the region of 20%. We quantify it from the survey. [Request a quotation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/) [See the work](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/) Mayfair rooms tend to carry expensive materials: hand-painted scenic papers, silk, grasscloth and fabric walling. They are also rooms that stay in use while the work goes on, whether that is a hotel floor with guests or a house with a household. At Brown's Hotel the package was wallcoverings, fine painting, French polishing and other specialist finishes, carried out room by room around a working hotel. The same approach applies to a single drawing room: a contained work area, protection of floors and joinery, and a tidy room at the end of each day. We survey on site, write the scope room by room, and quantify the paper with the repeat and the wastage it needs. If the paper is supplied by your designer, we receive it, check it against the measure, and hang what was specified. ### On the public record - [Brown's Hotel, Mayfair](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/browns-hotel-mayfair/). Seven material families, with what each one asks of the wall, the joins and the cleaning. We hang all of them and can source them when you want that. A screen cannot match colour, texture or sheen, so ask for a physical sample before you decide. Saved materials stay on this device. There is no account. If you send an enquiry from this browser, the shortlist is attached. A starting point for your room ### Which families suit your room? A few practical choices narrow the families worth comparing. The final choice still needs a physical sample and the product's own instructions. #### Families to compare Strong side lighting can emphasise texture, joints and the surface underneath. Review a sample in that light. For a commercial specification, confirm the exact product's required performance documents and installation conditions with the responsible project professional. #### [Paper and non-woven](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/paper-and-non-woven/) You want a printed pattern or a quieter, more even visual finish. **Consider this:** Print, backing and care vary substantially between products. #### [Grasscloth and natural weaves](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/grasscloth-and-weaves/) Natural fibre and a visible panel character are part of the look you want. **Consider this:** Adjacent drops can differ in shade; do not expect an invisible joint. #### [Silk and textiles](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/silk-and-textiles/) You want a textile surface whose appearance changes with the light. **Consider this:** Delicate faces can be less forgiving of marks and handling. #### [Hand-painted scenic papers](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/hand-painted/) The scene should be designed around the room and its focal points. **Consider this:** Doors, corners and furniture can interrupt the composition. #### [Murals](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/murals/) One wall or a room needs a planned composition rather than a repeating pattern. **Consider this:** A preview cannot confirm the real colour, texture or precise crop. #### [Contract vinyl](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/contract-vinyl/) Cleaning and everyday wear are priorities worth discussing with the supplier. **Consider this:** The material name alone does not establish wet-area or fire suitability. #### [Acoustic wallcoverings](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/acoustic/) Sound performance forms part of a professionally specified system. **Consider this:** A decorative texture is not evidence of acoustic performance. [Discuss these choices](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/?intent=source) ### [Paper and non-woven](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/paper-and-non-woven/) Printed or plain, from a quiet texture to a large repeat. Seams are part of a hung wall. The match follows the repeat: free or straight. Half-drop and murals are set out on site, not by the simple calculator. ### [Grasscloth and natural weaves](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/grasscloth-and-weaves/) Sisal, raffia, grass and other weaves. Colour and texture move from roll to roll. Seams show. The direction of the weave is agreed before the first length is cut. [Installation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/grasscloth-installation/) ### [Silk and textiles](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/silk-and-textiles/) A cloth face with a sheen that changes as you move. Seams are planned so the light from the window does not catch a ridge. [Installation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/silk-wallcovering-installation/) ### [Hand-painted scenic papers](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/hand-painted/) Scenic and panelled papers, in the manner of houses such as de Gournay and Fromental. We hang them. We do not make them, and we are not affiliated with those makers. Panels follow a sequence. The scene has to meet across doors, windows and corners. The set-out starts from a fixed point. [Installation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/hand-painted-wallpaper-installation/) ### [Murals](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/murals/) Printed or hand-made scenes, including event murals hung for a fixed date. Set out from a fixed point so the image meets where it should. A roll calculator will not price a mural. [Installation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/mural-installation/) ### [Contract vinyl](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/contract-vinyl/) A tighter face specified for wear. At The OWO the install included Vescom. Seams are still there. They are planned, not promised away. [Installation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/hotel-wallcovering-installation/) ### [Acoustic wallcoverings](https://www.mrwallcover.com/materials/acoustic/) A textured face over an acoustic construction, or an acoustic panel. Edges, trims and cuts have to keep the system the way it was specified. [Installation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/acoustic-wallcovering-installation/) ### Compare the shortlist 0 Save two or more families to compare joins, care and where they belong. #### Paper and non-woven **Setting.** Homes and hotels **Joins.** Seams are part of a hung wall. The match follows the repeat: free or straight. Half-drop and murals are set out on site, not by the simple calculator. **Care.** Follow the maker. Many papers are not washable. We do not call a family washable, fire-rated or seamless unless that product’s own data says so. #### Grasscloth and natural weaves **Setting.** Rooms where variation is wanted **Joins.** Seams show. The direction of the weave is agreed before the first length is cut. **Care.** Dry and gentle. Adhesive on the face marks the weave. Not a washable surface. #### Silk and textiles **Setting.** Rooms where light is part of the finish **Joins.** Seams are planned so the light from the window does not catch a ridge. **Care.** Silk marks quickly. Care is the maker’s note, usually dry. It is not a corridor vinyl. #### Hand-painted scenic papers **Setting.** Suites and drawing rooms **Joins.** Panels follow a sequence. The scene has to meet across doors, windows and corners. The set-out starts from a fixed point. **Care.** As the maker specifies. These are not washable contract surfaces. #### Murals **Setting.** A single wall or a room with a scene **Joins.** Set out from a fixed point so the image meets where it should. A roll calculator will not price a mural. **Care.** Follow the maker. An event mural is not the same duty as a guest-room vinyl. #### Contract vinyl **Setting.** Busy hotel rooms and corridors **Joins.** Seams are still there. They are planned, not promised away. **Care.** More tolerant of cleaning than paper or silk, and still only as the maker allows. Vinyl on a wall is not, by itself, a fire certificate. #### Acoustic wallcoverings **Setting.** Rooms where sound was part of the specification **Joins.** Edges, trims and cuts have to keep the system the way it was specified. **Care.** Follow the system maker. We do not claim a decorative finish is an acoustic rating. [Discuss this shortlist](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/?intent=source) Material light studio ### Light on a material, before a sample. He is the controller of personal information sent through this site. For any privacy request, write to [info@mrwallcover.com](mailto:info@mrwallcover.com), or call the telephone number on the [contact page](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/). ### What this notice covers It covers information you give us when you ask for a quotation or otherwise get in touch: your name, telephone number, email address, project type, location, preferred start, your message, and any photographs you choose to send. It also covers the fact that this site, as published, does not use cookies and does not run analytics. ### How we use it We use those details to answer you, to prepare a quotation, and to arrange a survey or the work if you ask us to proceed. Photographs are used only to understand the walls, the material or the building. The lawful basis is steps taken at your request before a contract (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(b)). Keeping a record of the conversation, so we can reply properly and stand by any work that follows, is a legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f)). You can object to that record-keeping. If you do, we may not be able to keep working from the enquiry. ### How the form works On the public site, the enquiry form is delivered by FormSubmit (formsubmit.co), which forwards the submission to our email address. FormSubmit may show its own anti-spam check. Its privacy notice applies to that step. The form also uses a hidden field that people are asked not to fill. It does not use a timer. A private enquiry store can be switched on later, off GitHub Pages. When it is, the enquiry is saved before the page says it was received, a reference is shown, and an email alert is separate from that save. A draft of a project brief keeps the non-sensitive answers in this tab only, and not your name, email, phone or message. If an enquiry becomes a live commission, we may need to share relevant details with a client, a designer or a main contractor where you would expect that, for example to arrange access. Email you send also passes through your email provider and ours. ### How long we keep it We keep enquiry correspondence for as long as we need it to answer you, to carry out any work that follows, and to meet the twelve-month workmanship guarantee. You can ask us to delete an enquiry that did not become a job. We do not keep photographs once they are no longer needed for that enquiry or that commission. ### Your rights You can ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, ask us to restrict how we use it, and object to use based on legitimate interests. Long celebrated as dating from 1837, the hotel’s own commissioned research now traces its founding to 1832, when James and Sarah Brown opened their doors at 23 Dover Street. It has never been renamed, rebuilt or relocated, which makes it London’s oldest luxury hotel. Its guest book reads like a syllabus. Alexander Graham Bell made Britain’s first telephone call here in 1876. Rudyard Kipling came from the day he was married and returned for more than four decades; Agatha Christie’s *At Bertram’s Hotel* owes much to her stays. Theodore Roosevelt stayed before his marriage in 1886, and Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt spent their honeymoon here. Rocco Forte Hotels acquired Brown’s in 2003. ### The brief To act as main decorating contractor across a sequence of rooms and suites: preparing every surface, hanging premium wallcoverings, fine painting, French polishing and specialist finishes, and spray-finishing the hotel’s richly moulded ceilings. All of it within a fully operating hotel, to programme, around guests in residence. ### Our approach **Preparation and priming.** Period walls were filled, made good and primed until they were true enough to receive both fine paint and wide-width printed papers. On walls of this age, the hours spent here decide everything that follows. **Setting out.** Adam’s Eden is a large-scale design with a 108.5 cm half-drop repeat. Each room was set out from its focal points (chimneypieces, doorcases and bed walls) so that the birds and branches fall naturally, and so the pattern meets the cornice with composure. **Ceilings.** The ornate moulded ceilings were spray-finished to give a flawless, even coat that keeps every crisp detail of the plasterwork, something a brush or roller cannot achieve on enrichment of this depth. **Fine finishes.** Fine painting, French polishing and specialist finishes were carried out by the same team, so that joinery, walls and ceilings were finished as one coherent scheme. **A live hotel.** Brown’s remained open throughout. We worked closely with the main contractor and the hotel’s management on access, timing, protection and housekeeping, keeping work contained and quiet. The project was delivered on time, with the hotel open throughout. ### Materials - **[Lewis & Wood – Adam’s Eden](https://www.lewisandwood.co.uk/wallpapers/adams-eden/):** designed by the decorative artist Adam Calkin and one of Lewis & Wood’s signature designs, printed on wide non-woven paper. The design is identified from the printed selvedge photographed on site; the colourway is not recorded here. - Other wallcoverings appear in our photographs, including a green trailing-leaf design; these are not identified here. ### Outcome Rooms that feel as though they have always been this way: Adam Calkin’s garden climbing beneath freshly finished plasterwork, and calm, tailored bedrooms. All of it delivered on time, in a hotel that never closed its doors. ### Photographs ### On site Smoothing a length in a Brown's corridor. A dark ground with a pale botanical trail. Her watercolour paintings draw on the movement of water, migration, Indian and Nigerian architecture, and family photographs from the 1960s to the 1980s. Calico Wallpaper translated them into a large-scale mural. For the launch, the mural became the backdrop to Ahluwalia’s SS27 collection, *Revel*, on the runway at Rosewood London. ### The brief Install the Estuary mural as the show backdrop within the production schedule, with the show the following day. The work had to be finished, clean and camera-ready in a working hotel event space that was being built around us. ### Our approach - **Preparation first.** The backdrop surfaces were prepared and sanded before hanging, so that a mural this soft and luminous would read without a flaw under show lighting. - **Panel sequencing.** A mural is a single image split across panels. Each one was hung in order and matched edge to edge so that the watercolour washes flow unbroken across the wall. - **Working to the clock.** We worked alongside the show production crew and finished on the evening of 18 September, ready for the runway the next day. ### Outcome On 19 September 2026 Ahluwalia showed *Revel* in front of Estuary, and the collection launched worldwide on Calico Wallpaper’s site the same week. ### Links and press - [Estuary collection (Brackish, Confluence, Estuarine, Sounding, Tidelight)](https://calicowallpaper.com/collection/estuary/) - [Calico press release: Estuary launch at Rosewood London](https://calicowallpaper.press.camronglobal.com/calico-wallpaper-and-ahluwalia-launch-estuary-during-london-fashion-week) - [MOD Magazine, Ahluwalia SS27 *Revel*](https://modmagazine.com/ahluwalia-spring-summer-2027-revel/) - [Wallpaper*, LDF 2026 live coverage (Estuary)](https://www.wallpaper.com/design-interiors/live/london-design-festival-2026) - [Calico Wallpaper on LinkedIn, “Introducing Estuary” (15 Sep 2026)](https://www.linkedin.com/posts/calico-wallpaper_introducing-estuary-by-ahluwalia-known-for-activity-7505671848437886977-VyQ7) ### Launch dinner panels for Calico #### At a glance - **In partnership with:** Calico Wallpaper, Brooklyn - **Event:** the London launch dinner for Estuary by Ahluwalia, London Design Festival 2026 - **Where the dinner was held:** NoMad London, Covent Garden - **Our work:** the freestanding panels were papered in a workshop, not at the hotel - **When:** panels hung 14 September 2026, ahead of the dinner #### The project This was an event install for Calico Wallpaper, not a hotel fit-out. Calico hosted a dinner at NoMad London. The backdrop was a pair of temporary walls built off site. We papered the Estuary panels on those flats in the workshop and they were delivered finished. We did not hang them at the hotel. #### Our approach - **Workshop installation:** papering on the flat, in controlled conditions, gives cleaner edges than hanging in a room that is about to host a dinner. - **Edges and returns:** for freestanding panels the edges show from every angle, so the paper was wrapped and finished to look like a solid surface. #### Links - [Estuary collection](https://calicowallpaper.com/collection/estuary/) - [Wallpaper*, LDF 2026 live: “Calico Wallpaper launches Estuary” (dinner at NoMad)](https://www.wallpaper.com/design-interiors/live/london-design-festival-2026) - [Calico press release](https://calicowallpaper.press.camronglobal.com/calico-wallpaper-and-ahluwalia-launch-estuary-during-london-fashion-week) ### Photographs By [Dorin Burcus](https://www.mrwallcover.com/about/#dorin), founder · Last updated 9 October 2026 --- # BEVERLY 1975 x Calico: Cadence, LDF 2026 | Mr Wallcover URL: https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/calico-beverly-1975-cadence/ Last updated: 2026-10-09 The Lavery, Cromwell Place, South Kensington ## Calico Wallpaper x BEVERLY 1975: Cadence at The Lavery, Brompton Design District A feature wall for New York homewares shop BEVERLY 1975's first London presentation. **Delivered in partnership with [Calico Wallpaper](https://calicowallpaper.com/).** **In the press:** [Family Style, BEVERLY 1975 at Brompton Design District](https://www.family.style/articles/beverly-1975-brompton-design-district-london) · [Martyn White, “BEVERLY 1975 CONCIERGE: Beverly Nguyen Comes to London”](https://martynwhite.co/beverly-1975-concierge-beverly-nguyen-brompton/) · [The Design Release, CONCIERGE event listing](https://www.thedesignrelease.com/event/lon-the-lavery-concierge) · [Calico Wallpaper on LinkedIn, opening night (12 Sep 2026)](https://www.linkedin.com/posts/calico-wallpaper_last-night-we-celebrated-the-opening-of-activity-7504542081961586688-GePL) ### At a glance - **In partnership with:** Calico Wallpaper, Brooklyn - **Exhibitor:** BEVERLY 1975 (Beverly Nguyen), launching CONCIERGE, its travelling retail concept - **Event:** Brompton Design District, London Design Festival 2026, 12–20 September - **Venue:** The Lavery, Cromwell Place, South Kensington - **Installed:** 8 September 2026, one day on site - **Product:** Cadence by Athena Calderone, in Oxblood ### The project For its first London appearance, BEVERLY 1975 built its space around its signature pegboard. Behind it ran Calico Wallpaper’s Cadence, designed with Athena Calderone. In Oxblood it reads, in one reviewer’s words, “as aged patina”: a deep, layered red that sets off ceramics, textiles and lighting. ### Our approach - **Prepared for a perfect finish.** Cadence’s quiet, layered texture shows every imperfection in the wall beneath, so preparation came first. - **Seams that disappear.** With a tonal, painterly ground there is no motif to hide a join in. Every seam was butted and rolled to vanish. - **One day, ready for styling.** The wall was finished in a single day, leaving the space clear for the BEVERLY team to style before the opening. ### Links and press - [Cadence collection (Alabaster, Fawn, Jasper, Oxblood, Porcelain)](https://calicowallpaper.com/collection/cadence/) - [Family Style, BEVERLY 1975 at Brompton Design District](https://www.family.style/articles/beverly-1975-brompton-design-district-london) - [Martyn White, “BEVERLY 1975 CONCIERGE: Beverly Nguyen Comes to London”](https://martynwhite.co/beverly-1975-concierge-beverly-nguyen-brompton/) - [The Design Release, CONCIERGE event listing](https://www.thedesignrelease.com/event/lon-the-lavery-concierge) - [Calico Wallpaper on LinkedIn, opening night (12 Sep 2026)](https://www.linkedin.com/posts/calico-wallpaper_last-night-we-celebrated-the-opening-of-activity-7504542081961586688-GePL) ### Photographs By [Dorin Burcus](https://www.mrwallcover.com/about/#dorin), founder · Last updated 9 October 2026 --- # Lee Broom x Calico: Overture, Shoreditch | Mr Wallcover URL: https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/calico-lee-broom-overture/ Last updated: 2026-10-09 Lee Broom flagship showroom, Rivington Street, Shoreditch ## Lee Broom x Calico Wallpaper: 'Overture' at the Lee Broom Shoreditch showroom Lee Broom's first wallpaper, a trompe-l'oeil theatre curtain, brought to the UK for London Design Festival 2025. **Delivered in partnership with [Calico Wallpaper](https://calicowallpaper.com/).** **In the press:** [Lee Broom, “Lee Broom x Calico Wallpaper present Overture”](https://leebroom.com/collaboration/lee-broom-x-calico-wallpaper-present-overture/) · [Lee Broom, *Trio of Design*, LDF 2025](https://leebroom.com/exhibition/london-design-festival-2025trio-of-designthree-presentations-at-the-lee-broom-shoreditch-showroom/) · [ICON Magazine](https://www.iconeye.com/design/lee-broom-invites-visitors-into-a-unique-showcase-of-his-ground-breaking-work-from-the-past-year) · [CC Magazine](https://ccmagazine.es/en/lee-broom-trio-of-design-london-design-festival-2025/) ### At a glance - **In partnership with:** Calico Wallpaper, Brooklyn, with Lee Broom - **Event:** London Design Festival 2025, *Trio of Design*, Lee Broom’s Shoreditch flagship, 16–21 September 2025 - **Collection:** Overture, Lee Broom’s first-ever wallpaper (installed design: Matinee) - **Our work:** - survey and measurements for Calico’s layout - wall preparation - installation of the mural across a side wall and a back wall with a concealed door - wallpapered theatrical flats for Calico’s LDF dinner - **Dates:** surveyed July 2025; installed 9 September 2025 ### The collection Overture grew out of Lee Broom’s childhood as a child actor and his fascination with theatre drapery: “the huge draped curtains with painted backdrops” and sets that played tricks with perspective. The wallpaper is a trompe-l’oeil curtain that turns a flat wall into a stage. First shown in New York, it was “reimagined for the London audience” in one of three rooms of Lee Broom’s Rivington Street showroom. ### Our approach - **Measured for a bespoke layout.** We surveyed the room in July 2025 and supplied the dimensions from which Calico drew the panel layout. Overture is made to measure, so the folds of the curtain fall exactly where the room needs them. - **Wall preparation.** The showroom walls were filled and sanded smooth. A drapery illusion only works if no real-world bump or ripple breaks the painted folds. - **Large-format panels, double cut.** Calico’s fibre panels, about 68 cm wide, are hung with a bleed and double cut on the wall. That gives invisible seams through the soft gradients of the folds. - **Hiding the door.** On the back wall the curtain runs straight across a flush door. The pattern is carried over it so that the door disappears into the drape. ### The dinner flats For Calico’s London Design Festival dinner the same September, we also papered freestanding theatrical flats in a set builder’s workshop on 15 September 2025, ready to be moved into the dining venue. ### Outcome From 16 to 21 September 2025, visitors to Shoreditch Design Triangle walked into a room that appeared to be draped in theatre curtains. ### Links and press - [Overture collection (Applause, Audition, Auditorium, Chorus, Interval, Matinee, Recital)](https://calicowallpaper.com/collection/overture/) - [Calico: the Overture story](https://calicowallpaper.com/collection/overture/read-story/) - [Matinee](https://calicowallpaper.com/product/matinee/) - [Lee Broom, “Lee Broom x Calico Wallpaper present Overture”](https://leebroom.com/collaboration/lee-broom-x-calico-wallpaper-present-overture/) - [Lee Broom, *Trio of Design*, LDF 2025](https://leebroom.com/exhibition/london-design-festival-2025trio-of-designthree-presentations-at-the-lee-broom-shoreditch-showroom/) - [ICON Magazine](https://www.iconeye.com/design/lee-broom-invites-visitors-into-a-unique-showcase-of-his-ground-breaking-work-from-the-past-year) - [CC Magazine](https://ccmagazine.es/en/lee-broom-trio-of-design-london-design-festival-2025/) ### Photographs By [Dorin Burcus](https://www.mrwallcover.com/about/#dorin), founder · Last updated 9 October 2026 --- # DoubleTree West End | Mr Wallcover URL: https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/doubletree-west-end/ Last updated: 2026-10-09 92 Southampton Row, Holborn, London WC1 ## DoubleTree by Hilton London – West End Guest room wallcoverings at the Holborn hotel in 2019. Designed by Sir Edwin Cooper, Ten Trinity Square was opened by the Prime Minister, David Lloyd George, in 1922 as the headquarters of the Port of London Authority. In 1946 it hosted a reception marking the inaugural meeting of the General Assembly of the United Nations, an occasion held in the building’s ballroom. Acquired by Reignwood Group in 2010, the Grade II*-listed building underwent a seven-year restoration and conversion, led architecturally by Aukett Swanke, before opening as a Four Seasons hotel and private residences in 2017. It stands a short walk from the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, the neighbourhood whose name the hotel took in 2024. ### The brief To paper the guest rooms and suites: premium finishes, among them Phillip Jeffries’ tailored Tweed, that had to sit comfortably beside restored heritage fabric, fine joinery and polished timber, and to read as one surface from the first room to the last. ### Our approach **Survey.** Every space was surveyed before a single roll was opened, so that substrates, junctions and sight lines were understood rather than discovered. **Preparation and priming.** Walls were prepared and primed to suit each material. With textile wallcoverings the substrate is everything; any flaw beneath a tweed or woven surface will eventually show. **Setting out.** Drops were planned around windows, doors and joinery so that seams fell where the eye would not look for them, and so that each run began and ended with intent. **Pattern and seam control.** Natural textiles vary from roll to roll. Batches, shading and seams were checked continuously so that walls read as one continuous surface. **Coordination.** Across the years on site the team worked hand in hand with the electricians, the French polishers and the main contractor, sequencing our work around second-fix electrics and polished joinery so that no trade compromised another. The team’s organisation was as much a part of the finish as the craft itself. ### Materials - **[Phillip Jeffries Tweed](https://www.phillipjeffries.com/shop/CARD-TW-LINEN):** a tailored textile wallcovering with the soft, flecked texture of classic suiting. Phillip Jeffries also offers a [Vinyl Tweed](https://www.phillipjeffries.com/shop/CARD-N-TWEED); the exact Tweed reference used at Ten Trinity Square is not recorded here. - **[Omexco](https://www.omexco.com/wallcoverings):** fine Belgian wallcoverings with a long heritage in textiles. It is a non-repeating, painterly landscape, printed to the store’s exact wall sizes and wrapped continuously around the corners. - **Our role:** specialist installation of the Calico panels ### The project The brand’s new store concept takes its cue from the painterly British landscape. In this store, the main walls are wrapped in a single, continuous Calico Wallpaper mural. A band of warm, earthy pink sits over a drifting grey-white mist, which settles into deep ink-blue ground with flecks of green and violet. A lit cove runs along the top, so the mural reads like a horizon floating around the room. Calico prints murals like this to the exact size of each wall. That makes the work exacting. Every panel has its own place in the picture, so the horizon has to run level and unbroken across each join and around every corner. ### Working airside, in a live terminal Airport retail is one of the most tightly controlled places we work. The broad strokes: - **Security first.** Airside work means vetted operatives with airside passes. Tools and materials are checked through security and accounted for on site. Deliveries follow the airport’s logistics and escort procedures. - **Overnight working.** In a terminal that never fully closes, the fit-out has to fit around passenger flows. Our photographs of the finished walls were taken between 02:30 and 03:42, with the gate lounges outside empty. - **Clean, contained and quiet.** We work inside the hoarding, with protected floors and nothing left outside the unit, so the concourse is ready for the first departures. Of these, the overnight working is what our timestamped photographs record for this job. The security and containment points describe what airside work at Heathrow requires in general. ### Our approach - **Panel order is everything.** We checked and sequenced the panels so the horizon runs level across the whole store. - **Corners that keep the picture going.** The mural wraps continuously around internal corners, so the landscape never stops at a wall edge. - **Clean lines for the fit-out.** The mural meets a lit cove at the top and the joinery at the base. We left it finished around the services, ready for the shop-fitters’ fixtures and lighting. ### The paper Calico Wallpaper (Brooklyn, New York) makes non-repeating murals from hand-painted artwork, printed to fit each space. The new six-storey hotel overlooks the start-finish line on the Hamilton Straight, with track-facing rooms, a rooftop terrace and a footbridge spanning the circuit to the hospitality building opposite. It opened in time for the 2022 British Grand Prix, and in July 2023 Hilton celebrated its debut with a rooftop party during the race weekend, held with its long-standing partner McLaren Racing. The 197 bedrooms are contemporary and calm: pale walls, warm timber, and generous glazing that frames the circuit itself. Above them, The Rooftop offers 360-degree views of the racetrack and beyond, while BOX Bar & Kitchen serves guests throughout the day. Bicester Village and the Silverstone Museum are close at hand. ### The brief To act as main wallcoverings contractor on a new-build, 197-room hotel due to open in time for the British Grand Prix, where a consistent, crisp finish has to repeat room after room and floor after floor. ### Our approach **Preparation and priming.** New-build walls bring their own challenges. Surfaces were prepared and primed so that every room offered the same sound, even base, which is the foundation of consistency at scale. **Setting out.** In a hotel built from repeated room types, setting out becomes a system. Each layout was established so that seams fell consistently in the same discreet positions around headboards, joinery and windows. **Consistency at scale.** Batches and shading were managed across the full run of rooms so that a guest moving between floors would never notice a difference. In a building of this kind, quality is measured less by any single wall than by the hundredth room matching the first. **Coordination.** As main wallcoverings contractor we sequenced our work with the main contractor and the other trades, so that rooms could be handed over cleanly. ### Outcome A trackside hotel that opened in time for the 2022 British Grand Prix, its rooms finished to one consistent standard. Wallcovering on this scale is rarely noticed when it is done well, and that is precisely the point. It is a room of character: a built-in writing desk, exposed beams and floorboards that slope with age. The owner is a private client, and in keeping with our policy we do not name them or the house. ### The scheme House of Hackney’s design consultancy drew up the scheme. Rather than lighten the room, it leans into its dark, romantic character: - **Walls:** BAMBUSA in Midnight, a painterly bamboo forest after dark - **Bed hangings:** velvet around an antique four-poster, lined with House of Hackney’s SERPENTIS snakeskin - **Ceiling:** SERPENTIS - **Joinery:** fireplace, beams and bookshelves painted in the darkest blue - **Finishing touches:** pineapple lamps and a brass [SERPENTIS candelabra](https://www.houseofhackney.com/products/house-of-hackney-serpentis-candelabra-brass) ### Our work Our team hung the BAMBUSA wallpaper. A room like this is unforgiving to paper: - **No straight lines.** In an old house, walls lean, floors slope and beams cut across the wall at odd angles. The bamboo stems are strong verticals, so each drop had to be plumbed and set out with care. That way the forest reads as upright, even though the room around it is not. - **Working around period joinery.** The paper is cut around the beams, the fireplace, the built-in desk and the shelving, then finished tight to the dark-blue paintwork. - **Matching the drama.** Midnight is a deep ground. Joins have to be precise and edges clean, because any gap or lifted seam shows against the dark colour. Our photographs from April 2019 show the room complete: BAMBUSA on every wall, the four-poster dressed, and SERPENTIS overhead. ### Materials - House of Hackney – [BAMBUSA Wallpaper, Midnight](https://www.houseofhackney.com/products/bambusa-wallpaper-midnight): all walls ### Photographs By [Dorin Burcus](https://www.mrwallcover.com/about/#dorin), founder · Last updated 9 October 2026 --- # Hyde London City (the Old Bailey Hotel) | Mr Wallcover URL: https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/old-bailey-hotel/ Last updated: 2026-10-09 15 Old Bailey, City of London EC4M 7EF ## Hyde London City (the Old Bailey Hotel) A complete decorating package for 110 rooms: paint, specialist wallcoverings and window film, delivered over about two years inside a Grade II-listed Victorian hotel opposite the Central Criminal Court. **As featured by Timorous Beasties:** [Studio Moren x Timorous Beasties at Hyde London City](https://www.timorousbeasties.com/story/studio-moren-x-timorous-beasties-at-hyde-london-city). For centuries the name has meant justice: the old sessions house stood beside Newgate Prison, and both were swept away for E. W. Mountford’s Central Criminal Court, opened by King Edward VII in 1907. Number 15 is older than its famous neighbour. Completed in 1874 by Evans Cronk as the Spiers & Pond hotel, it is recorded as the first hotel in London to have electric lighting. It later spent decades as offices. In 2024, after a full restoration, it returned to its first purpose: on 2 September 2024 it opened as Hyde London City, an Ennismore hotel. It is a building of carved stone bays, arched and round oculus windows, a sweeping timber-railed staircase and rooftop views of St Paul’s. Every one of those features had to be decorated around, protected and finished to a standard that suits both a listed building and a design-led hotel. ### The design The interiors were designed by Studio Moren. For the bedrooms they selected two Timorous Beasties designs, produced as custom-printed vinyl wallpaper: Totem Damask in Black & Blue, and Tropical Clouded Leopard in Vanilla. Vinyl lets the patterns stand up to the daily wear of a busy hotel while keeping their colour and detail. Timorous Beasties describe the result as “bold pattern with atmosphere” ([Timorous Beasties](https://www.timorousbeasties.com/story/studio-moren-x-timorous-beasties-at-hyde-london-city)). ### The brief One team, one standard, from the first sample room to handover: the complete decorating package across 110 rooms and the circulation spaces, the specialist wallcoverings that give each room its character, and the window film to the glazing. ### Our approach **Sample room first.** Our record starts in November 2022 with a finished sample room: Timorous Beasties’ Tropical Clouded Leopard set behind the bed as a shaped headboard panel. Agreeing the finish, the setting out and the detailing in one room first meant that the next 109 could be repeated with confidence. **Preparation.** A building of this age moves and varies from room to room. New and old surfaces were filled, made good and primed so that the paint and wallcoverings sit on a sound, even base. Our photographs show walls taken back to a smooth finish before a single drop was hung. **Setting out large-scale pattern.** Tropical Clouded Leopard is a large-scale, quarter-drop design. Hung as a shaped panel behind each bed, its placement has to be judged room by room so the composition sits centrally and reads as intended. Totem Damask runs differently: a single ten-metre repeat with no horizontal match, so every drop has to be chosen by eye to keep a feature wall balanced. **The suite.** In the suite, House of Hackney’s LIMERENCE in the Galapagos colourway wraps the room in lush, painterly palms, including the bedroom and the dressing area. It is supplied as four 45 cm panels per roll, so the panels had to be hung in sequence and aligned precisely around joinery and windows. **Window film.** Alongside the decoration, we fitted [Solar Screen](https://solarscreen.eu/en/) window film to the glazing. See our [window film service](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/window-film/). **Decoration throughout.** The decorating package ran through corridors, stair cores and rooms: deep greens and warm terracottas in the circulation spaces, crisp finishes to the panelling, and careful cutting-in around period mouldings, balustrades and the timber handrail of the main stair. ### Materials - Timorous Beasties – Tropical Clouded Leopard, Vanilla, custom-printed vinyl: guest-room headboard walls - Timorous Beasties – Totem Damask, Black & Blue, custom-printed vinyl: guest-room feature walls - House of Hackney – LIMERENCE, Galapagos: the suite - Solar Screen window film: glazing ### Outcome On 2 September 2024 the first hotel in London to be lit by electricity reopened as a hotel, 150 years after it was built. Young died before it was finished; his son Clyde Young and Sir John Taylor completed the design. For almost six decades it was the seat of Britain’s military administration. Lord Haldane, Lord Kitchener, David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill all held office here as Secretary of State for War, and Douglas Haig served at the War Office as Director of Military Training and then Director of Staff Duties. In October 1914 a young T. E. Lawrence joined its Geographical Section. In 1960 John Profumo arrived as Secretary of State for War; his affair with Christine Keeler, and his resignation in 1963, nearly toppled the government. Its secrets run deeper still. Britain’s Secret Service Bureau, the forerunner of MI5 and MI6, was created in meetings at the War Office in 1909. Ian Fleming, a wartime naval intelligence officer, would have known the building, and its air of espionage helped inspire James Bond; the building has since appeared as MI6 in Bond films. After a comprehensive eight-year restoration under the Hinduja Group and ONEX Holding, the building opened on 29 September 2023 as The OWO, home to Raffles London, the brand’s first hotel in the United Kingdom. ### The brief To install the hotel’s wallcoverings in the bedrooms and several other areas: a bespoke Vescom wallcovering created for the hotel, and Vescom Alcantara in some of the suites, applied to walls and, in places, to joinery. The rooms, designed by the late Thierry Despont, call for a calm, light-filled backdrop to Edwardian proportions. ### Our approach **Preparation and priming.** Plain and finely textured wallcoverings forgive nothing. Every wall was prepared and primed to a true, even surface before installation, so that the light falling through tall Whitehall windows reveals texture, not substrate. **Setting out.** Rooms were set out from their windows, doorcases and joinery, with seams planned to disappear in raking light. Where the wallcovering continued onto joinery, it was set out with the same discipline as the walls. **Seam and shade control.** With a bespoke production run, consistency from roll to roll and room to room is paramount. Batches were checked and managed so that corridors of rooms read as one. **Coordination.** Work was sequenced alongside the other trades and the main contractor within one of London’s most complex heritage restorations. ### Materials - **[Vescom](https://vescom.com/en/wallcovering), bespoke:** a wallcovering made specifically for the hotel. The Duchy still owns it today. A 13th-century gatehouse still guards the bailey. Within the walls, an 11,000 sq ft Georgian manor with nine bedrooms was added in the early 1800s, its windows looking out over nine acres of gardens and the estuary beyond. In 2018, after a chance visit to the gardens, House of Hackney’s founders took over from the landscape designers Isabel and Julian Bannerman as the castle’s custodians. They found a house of beautiful proportions that, in the founders’ words, needed “a lot of restoration”: paint stripped back to make “a blank canvas”, then a multi-year, foundational renovation. Trematon became the brand’s “spiritual home”, the setting of its own campaigns and the namesake of its TREMATONIA print. ### The brief To hang House of Hackney’s own wallpapers across the Georgian house. That meant large-scale murals, densely drawn florals and ceiling-to-ceiling “print drenching”, in a house where every wall is a little out of true and every ceiling a little out of level, and where the client is also the designer of the paper. ### Our approach **Strip-out and preparation.** Our photographs from 2019 and early 2020 show rooms taken back to bare plaster, old finishes scraped off and the atrium stripped and lined. Reinforced lining materials (Wallrock and Anaglypta cartons appear on site in June 2019) were used to give the hand-printed papers a true, stable ground. **Ceilings as a fifth wall.** Several rooms were papered overhead. That includes the skylit atrium, where the print had to be cut around a decorative oval lantern and a chandelier rose, and the small box room, papered on all four walls and the ceiling. **Murals and setting-out.** PLANTASIA is a panoramic forest landscape that does not forgive an error. Each drop was set out to plan, and photographs from June 2020 show the crew working on ladders across the full height of the room. **Pattern and seam control.** Digitally printed papers in deep, saturated colours were batch-checked from the roll labels, and pattern matches were carried across corners, chimney breasts and door heads. **Heritage relief.** In November 2021 the team installed Lincrusta, the embossed heritage wallcovering made since 1877. Panels were laid out on the table, then hung to a laser line for perfect vertical alignment. **Living house, long programme.** The work ran in phases between 2019 and 2022, around a family home, a working estate and a house that was opening its doors to guests. ### Materials - **[PLANTASIA](https://www.houseofhackney.com/products/plantasia-wallpaper-sage)**: panoramic forest-landscape mural - **[GAIA – Prussian Blue](https://www.houseofhackney.com/products/gaia-wallpaper-prussian-blue)** - ** [FLORA DELANICA](https://www.houseofhackney.com/products/flora-delanica-wallpaper-clay)** (Clay) (identified from our site photographs) - **[COSMOS – Celestial Blue](https://www.houseofhackney.com/products/cosmos-wallpaper-celestial-blue)** (identified from our site photographs) - **[FLORA FANTASIA – Noir Stripe](https://www.houseofhackney.com/products/flora-fantasia-wallpaper-noir-stripe)** (identified from our site photographs) - **[FLORA FANTASIA – Ecru](https://www.houseofhackney.com/products/flora-fantasia-wallpaper-ecru)** (identified from our site photographs) - **[ARTEMIS](https://www.houseofhackney.com/products/artemis-wallpaper-petrol)** (Petrol / [Blush](https://www.houseofhackney.com/products/artemis-wallpaper-blush)) (identified from our site photographs) - **[HOLLYHOCKS](https://www.houseofhackney.com/products/hollyhocks-wallpaper-summer)** (identified from our site photographs) - **[Lincrusta](https://www.lincrusta.com/)** heritage relief (not House of Hackney) Other House of Hackney designs that the press records at Trematon, but which we have **not** matched to our photos: [FLORALIA](https://www.houseofhackney.com/products/floralia-wallpaper-ecru) (bedroom, per AD), [GALANTHI](https://www.houseofhackney.com/products/galanthi-wallpaper-viridis) (guest bedroom, per AD) and [PHANTASIA – Selenite Orange](https://www.houseofhackney.com/products/phantasia-wallpaper-selenite-orange) (powder room, per AD). Today’s interiors will not all match our photographs.* ### Outcome A Georgian house within a Norman castle, dressed wall by wall and ceiling by ceiling in the prints of the brand that lives there, across nearly three years of phased work. For a wallcovering contractor there are few sterner tests than hanging a designer’s own paper in the designer’s own home. ### Photographs By [Dorin Burcus](https://www.mrwallcover.com/about/#dorin), founder · Last updated 9 October 2026 --- # Wallcovering Installation London | Hotels, Homes, Specialist Materials | Mr Wallcover URL: https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/ Last reviewed: 2026-10-09 Services ## Survey, supply, hang, and stay with the room. Mr Wallcover is a wallpaper installer in London for hotels and prime homes. The same practice can take the survey, the management, the supply and the aftercare, or join a package that already has a main contractor. 01 ### Surveying We measure on site, or from drawings when that is what the programme needs. Skirting, joinery, doors and windows come out of the area. What is left is the wall that will actually be hung. Quantities include wastage and pattern repeat. Where the repeat is demanding, the allowance is generally higher, often in the region of 20%. A roll that looks generous on a plan can run short on the last pier. The survey is also a judgement on the wall. If it is not ready for the material specified, we say so before anyone orders the last drop. 02 ### Project management Every project has a project leader on the ground. That person is the day-to-day contact for the craft, the progress and the expectations that have been set. On a longer commission, senior oversight quality-controls the work and agrees a forward plan with you, in person, each week. Frequent and plain communication is part of the method, not a courtesy added at the end. The team you meet on the first day is the core team that finishes. Disruption is kept low. The work is physically contained, and we leave the place tidy. In a home we are visitors. In a hotel we work around the house. 03 ### Supply On many hotel and flagship jobs the wallcovering is free-issue from the designer, the brand or the client. We manage delivery, check the delivery against the measure, and hang what was specified. We can also procure. Either way, the order has to cover the repeat and the wastage, or the last wall is the one that waits. Delivery is timed to the hang. Paper sitting in a corridor for days is a risk to the goods and a nuisance to the building. 04 ### Installation This is the craft the practice is built on. Wallcovering installation for hotels, retail flagships and prime residential rooms, including paper on joinery where the drawings show it. Preparation, where it is in the specification, includes stripping old paper, dustless sanding, and making good cracks and uneven surfaces. Some materials are specified with a lining paper. Some, including certain mural installs, are specified without one. We follow the specification. Protection of floors, furniture and finished joinery is part of the hang, not an optional extra. Where Mr Wallcover is appointed as main decorating contractor, the package can include fine painting, French polishing and other specialist finishes, as it did at Brown's Hotel, Mayfair. 05 ### Aftercare Aftercare is the fifth part of the service. A return inspection is included once the paper has settled, about four to six weeks after completion. Seams and edges are attended to. There is a priority repair call-out for the workmanship, and a twelve-month guarantee. The detail, including care by material and what the guarantee does not cover, is on the aftercare page. [The aftercare page](https://www.mrwallcover.com/aftercare/) Materials ### What we hang. Silk, grasscloth, fabric, vinyl, hand-painted papers, murals and acoustic panels are hung by the same team; what changes is the preparation, the set-out and the patience each one needs. These are the materials the practice hangs. Where two lengths meet. Brown's Hotel, Mayfair. #### [Silk](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/silk-wallcovering-installation/) Lustrous, and quick to mark. Hung with clean hands and an adhesive that suits the cloth. Seams are planned so the light does not catch a ridge. #### [Grasscloth and natural weaves](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/grasscloth-installation/) The irregularity is the point of the material. Colour and weave vary from roll to roll, and the seams are visible. We agree that, and the direction of the weave, before the first length is cut. #### [Fabric walling](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/fabric-walling/) Textile on the wall, often in wider goods, with care at the edges and where it meets joinery, skirtings and reveals. #### [Vinyl and contract wallcoverings](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/hotel-wallcovering-installation/) The usual specification in busy hotel rooms and corridors. At The OWO, Whitehall, the install was Vescom, to walls and to parts of the joinery. #### [Hand-painted papers](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/hand-painted-wallpaper-installation/) Scenic and panelled papers in the manner of de Gournay and Fromental. They need a sound wall, a patient set-out, and time. We hang them for London houses and hotels. This is installation, not a claim to make the paper. #### [Murals](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/mural-installation/) Printed and hand-made murals, set out from a fixed point so the scene meets where it should, including around doors and corners. #### [Acoustic wallcoverings and panels](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/acoustic-wallcovering-installation/) Acoustic wallcoverings and acoustic panels, hung so the face keeps the performance it was specified for. Commonly in hotel corridors and function rooms, restaurants, offices, and in homes where a room needs to be quieter. We install to the maker's specification. By [Dorin Burcus](https://www.mrwallcover.com/about/#dorin), founder · Last reviewed 9 October 2026 --- # Architectural & Furniture Film Wrapping London | Mr Wallcover URL: https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/architectural-film-wrapping/ Last reviewed: 2026-10-09 Services ## Architectural & furniture film wrapping Self-adhesive architectural films that refinish doors, joinery, lifts, counters and furniture in place, without stripping out or replacing them. [Request a quotation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/) [See the work](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/) Architectural film is a thin, self-adhesive surface in wood, stone, metal, leather-look, textured or solid finishes. Applied properly, it renews a door, a run of joinery or a piece of furniture where it stands. There is no spraying on site and no long drying time, and far less goes in the skip than with a replacement. It suits hotels and offices that cannot close a floor for long: bedroom doors and wardrobes, lift cars and lift lobbies, reception desks, bar fronts, kitchen fronts, wall panelling and loose furniture. Rooms can usually go back into use as each area is finished. The finish depends on the preparation. Surfaces are cleaned, keyed, filled and primed to the film maker's instruction. Edges, corners and returns are where a wrap succeeds or fails, so we plan them at the survey and agree them on a sample before the run starts. Where the finish calls for new panels or joinery rather than a wrap, see [wallcoverings on joinery and bespoke panels](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/joinery-wallcoverings-and-panels/): designed, made and installed as one package. Trained at Solar Screen's headquarters in Luxembourg in window films (Solar Screen) and architectural and furniture wrapping film (Cover Styl'). We install to the maker's own instructions. The same practice surveys, quantifies, supplies the film if you need it, installs and returns for aftercare. Makers: [Cover Styl' architectural and furniture films](https://coverstyl.com/en/), [Solar Screen window films](https://solarscreen.eu/en/) Questions ### Asked about Architectural & furniture film wrapping #### What can architectural film be applied to? Most smooth, sound and non-porous surfaces: painted or laminated doors, joinery, MDF, metal, lift interiors, counters and furniture. The surface is checked at the survey. Where it is flaking, damp or very textured, it needs work first, and we say so. #### Can film wrapping be done while a hotel or office stays open? Usually, yes. There is no spraying and little dust or smell, so work can go room by room or floor by floor, and each area can be handed back as it is finished. #### Can we see the finish before committing? Yes. We apply a sample on a real door or panel so the finish, the edges and the colour can be approved in the room's own light before the full run is ordered. The public record is two full exteriors: St George's Square in Pimlico and Inverness Terrace in Bayswater. [Request a quotation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/) [See the work](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/) A full exterior is surveyed, scaffolded and painted as one piece of work. The practice supplies and manages the scaffold, then repairs and paints masonry, render and stucco, including cornices, pediments, capitals and parapets. Windows, sills and architraves are finished with the elevation, and so are balconies, balustrades and railings. At [St George's Square, Pimlico](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/pimlico-st-georges-square/) the front and rear scaffolds were supplied and managed here. The work ran from cornice, pediment and portico repairs through masonry and render painting, sills, columns, balustrade and railings. At [Inverness Terrace, Bayswater](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/inverness-terrace/) the same approach covered a full scaffolded exterior, front and rear: stucco and render repairs, ornamental capitals and architraves, balconies, the portico, windows and the rear brickwork. An exterior can be one commission with the interior: all the internal works plus the full exterior, so the decorating and wallpapering inside and the elevation outside are surveyed, programmed and snagged together. Private residential buildings are published by street only. A survey still decides access, repairs and the programme. After the scaffold is struck, the same [aftercare](https://www.mrwallcover.com/aftercare/) applies as on an interior. ### On the public record - [St George's Square, Pimlico](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/pimlico-st-georges-square/). Questions ### Asked about Exterior works #### Do you supply and manage the scaffold? Yes. On the exteriors published here, the scaffold was supplied and managed by the practice, including the strike. Access, pavement and the order of elevations are agreed at the survey. #### What does the masonry and render painting cover? Stucco, render and masonry, including cornices, mouldings, pediments, parapets and crack repairs before paint. Where the rear is brick, that elevation is in the same scope when the survey includes it. #### Are windows part of an exterior? Yes. Sashes, sills and architraves are part of a full exterior, with the entrance joinery, balconies and railings. #### Can the interior be done with the exterior? Yes. One commission can be all the internal works plus the full exterior: decorating and wallpapering inside, then the front elevation, with one survey and one programme covering both. [Request a quotation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/) [See the work](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/) The most considered rooms carry the finish beyond the wall: across doors, wardrobe fronts, panelling and bespoke furniture, so that joinery and walls read as one surface. We apply wallcoverings to joinery with the same discipline as the walls around it. Seams, edges and returns are planned at the survey so the joins disappear. Joinery is a different surface from plaster. Faces are sealed and primed to suit the material, edges are wrapped or finished tight, and the pattern is carried across doors and frames. At [Lee Broom's Shoreditch showroom](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/calico-lee-broom-overture/) we ran Calico Wallpaper's Overture straight across a flush door until it vanished into the drape. At [Raffles London at The OWO](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/raffles-london-the-owo/) the wallcovering continued from the walls onto parts of the joinery. Where a panel, door or carcass needs a new surface rather than paper, we wrap it in specialist architectural film such as Cover Styl', in wood, stone, metal, leather-look and solid finishes. Where film is not the right answer, we finish panels in paper, fabric or relief wallcovering instead. See [architectural and furniture film wrapping](https://www.mrwallcover.com/services/architectural-film-wrapping/) for film on existing joinery. When the finish a designer wants cannot be bought off the shelf, we create bespoke wall panels and joinery to achieve it: panelling, framed and shaped panels, headboards, and door and wardrobe faces, made to the drawing and the finish. Heritage relief belongs to the same family. At the [Castle of Trematon](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/trematon-castle/) we hung Lincrusta relief panels to a laser line. Questions ### Asked about Joinery wallcoverings & bespoke panels #### Can wallpaper be applied to doors and wardrobes? Yes, on sound, smooth joinery that has been sealed and primed for it. The pattern is set out across the doors so it reads as one surface when they are closed, and hinge edges, handles and returns are detailed at the survey. #### Can you create panels to match a specific finish? Yes. We create bespoke wall panels and joinery to the drawing, then finish them in wallcovering, film or relief. The finish is designed in from the start rather than applied afterwards, and agreed on a sample before the run is made. #### Film or wallcovering on joinery: which is better? Film suits hard-wearing, wipe-clean surfaces in busy areas: hotel bedroom doors, wardrobes, lifts and counters. Wallcovering suits pattern, texture and continuity with the walls. Where both could work, we sample both in the room. #### Who looks after design, manufacture and installation? We do, as one managed package. The same team develops the detail, makes the panels and joinery, installs and finishes them, and returns for aftercare, so there is one point of responsibility throughout. [Request a quotation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/) [See the work](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/) Murals are set out from a fixed point so the scene meets where it should, including around doors and corners. Panels are checked against the supplier's layout before hanging. Some murals are specified with a lining paper and some without. We follow the specification, and we say at the survey if the wall needs work first. Measurements for a bespoke print are taken on site so the artwork is sized to the wall that will actually be hung. ### On the public record - [Castle of Trematon, Cornwall](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/trematon-castle/). [Request a quotation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/) [See the work](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/) Silk is lustrous, and quick to mark. It is hung with clean hands and an adhesive that suits the cloth. Seams are planned so the light from the windows does not catch a ridge. The wall has to be right first. Preparation, including a lining where the maker specifies one, is written into the scope. Protection of floors, furniture and finished joinery is part of the hang, not an optional extra. Questions ### Asked about Silk wallcovering installation #### Is silk wallpaper hard to install? It is unforgiving. Adhesive on the face or a ridge at the seam shows in raking light. That is why the set-out, the adhesive and the preparation are planned before the first length. [Request a quotation](https://www.mrwallcover.com/contact/) [See the work](https://www.mrwallcover.com/projects/) Window film changes how existing glass behaves without replacing it. There are four families. Decorative films give a frosted, etched, gradient or patterned finish, including logos and manifestations. Privacy films screen a view by day, or hide a room completely. Solar control films reduce heat gain and glare. Safety and security films help hold broken glass together. The right film depends on the glass, the frame, the orientation and what the room needs. Some films are not suitable for every type of double glazing, so we check the glass and the film maker's guidance before we recommend one. Glass is cleaned to a high standard, the film is cut to the visible pane and squeegeed out, and edges are finished neatly to the frame. Small moisture haze is normal for a short time while the adhesive cures, and we explain what to expect on the day. Trained at Solar Screen's headquarters in Luxembourg in window films (Solar Screen) and architectural and furniture wrapping film (Cover Styl'). We install to the maker's instructions. At Hyde London City (the Old Bailey Hotel) we fitted Solar Screen film to the glazing as part of the full decorating package. The same practice surveys, supplies the film if you need it, installs and comes back for aftercare. Full decorating package: decoration, specialist wallcoverings and window film, c. 2 years. Questions ### Asked about Window film installation #### Which type of window film do I need? Decorative or frosted film for screening and design, privacy film to hide a view, solar control film for heat and glare, and safety or security film to help hold broken glass together. Some films combine more than one job. We recommend one after seeing the glass and the room. #### Can window film go on double glazing? Often, but not every film suits every unit. Solar films in particular can raise the temperature of the glass. We check the glazing type and follow the film maker's guidance on what can be applied. #### Can window film be removed later? Yes. Film can be taken off and the glass cleaned, which makes it useful for rented premises, changing branding or a room that changes use.
